Nursing Assistant Health Unit Coordinator

Position Summary Department: 35007 Advocate Sherman Hospital – Nursery Status: Full‑time Hours: 36 per week Pay Range: $20.80 - $31.20 per hour Position: Nursing Assistant (Health Unit Coordinator) – Mother‑Baby Unit Key Responsibilities Assist the RN with daily patient care: bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, ambulation, positioning, and therapeutic assistive devices. Measure and document vitals (temperature, pulse, respiration), I&O, daily weights, and other requested data accurately in the EMR. Participate in admission, transfer, and discharge processes: room setup, orientation, linen removal, and management of patient belongings. Ensure call lights remain in reach and respond promptly to call‑lights. Perform purposeful rounding; report observations, concerns and patient/family needs to RN. Transport and reposition patients, using proper lifting techniques and assistive devices. Assist with nutritional needs: diet review, tray setup/removal, positioning and diet selection. Maintain skin integrity through repositioning and skin‑care measures. Provide special supplies (TED hose, sequential compression devices) and maintain them. Collect specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and perform point‑of‑care testing with proper labeling. Assist with IV removal, post‑mortem care, and bladder scans as directed. Follow infection‑prevention policies: hand hygiene, sterile and aseptic procedures, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and appropriate attire for isolation patients. Coordinate tests and treatments with various departments; maintain knowledge of diagnostic services. Use the EHR and other computer systems for ordering supplies, equipment and processing daily charges. Facilitate communication: answer calls, screen, manage paging, and assist with department equipment. Compile chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges and record expirations. Obtain and verify medical records for transfers to nursing homes and other facilities. Establish positive patient relationships and maintain a harmonious work environment. Qualifications Education: High‑school graduate, GED, or High‑School Equivalency Diploma. Experience: None required. Skills & Abilities: Basic computer skills; excellent oral and written communication; strong organizational skills; ability to set priorities; interpersonal skills; adaptability to changing priorities; attention to detail. Licensure / Certification: Nurse Aide in good standing with the state registry of practice; Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification (obtained within 45 days). Annual educational requirements: Nurse Aide oriented hospital certifications such as DNV or CARF. Physical Requirements Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs. over the head; carry up to 40 lbs. over a reasonable distance. Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force; perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present. May use foot pedals on carts or machines. Must have functional vision and hearing.
