Investment Director

Brightsmith

A rapidly growing, well-capitalized independent power producer (IPP) is seeking to build a leading platform focused on utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the United States. Backed by institutional capital and led by experienced industry executives, the company is focused on developing, owning, and operating large-scale storage assets supporting grid reliability and increasing power demand driven by electrification and data center growth.

The Role

The Investment Director will be a key member of the Investments team, reporting to senior leadership and helping oversee a team of investment professionals. This individual will play a central role in underwriting and executing equity investments into large-scale (100 MW+) BESS projects serving utilities and data centers, across both greenfield development and M&A opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all strategic and economic analyses to support investment decisions across development and acquisition opportunities
  • Review financial models and evaluate project-level risks, including detailed risk registers
Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Lead screening and evaluation of prospective investments
  • Drive the due diligence process, including risk tracking, economic analysis, and counterparty coordination
  • Play an active role in deal structuring, negotiation, and execution
  • Supervise the maintenance of a centralized database of key market inputs, including pricing, costs, and rates used in underwriting
Team Management
  • Manage and mentor Investment Managers and Associates
  • Direct workflows, establish best practices, and maintain standard operating procedures
Investment Decisions
  • Lead preparation of investment committee memoranda and Board materials for both development and M&A transactions
  • Own and maintain the corporate financial model
  • Lead portfolio-level analyses to inform capital allocation and long-term strategy
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, engineering, or a related field
  • 5–10 years of experience in investment banking, private equity, project finance, corporate development, or management consulting within energy or infrastructure
  • 2–5 years of experience specifically within renewable energy or power generation
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing and mentoring junior team members
  • Advanced financial modeling capabilities, ideally within project finance or tax equity
  • Strong analytical and commercial judgment
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
