Physician - Neurologist

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Duties Provide consultation services and follow‑up for neurology subspecialty patients in inpatient, outpatient, and affiliated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Work hours will be determined at the time of hiring and may include inpatient, outpatient clinic, and call duties. All full‑time providers must work a minimum of 80 hours per pay period (every two weeks) unless on leave. Participate in special projects relevant to the sub‑specialty, such as infection control, antibiotic stewardship, and other committees, as they become available. When working with inpatients, collaborate in discharge planning and other interdisciplinary patient care plan activities. Communicate patient status with hospitalists and other team members to ensure proper hand‑off at shift end. Act as supervising or collaborating physician for a mid‑level provider, providing clinical oversight and review. Supervising responsibilities will be noted in performance evaluation. Serve as surrogate for colleagues on leave when necessary. Maintain quality of care that meets professional standards at all times. Work within existing privileges unless an emergency requires otherwise. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens per VA policy). Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution meeting VA requirements. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Residency training: completed an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification, or counted by alternative pathways (e.g., one year of post‑medical training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑U.S. residency followed by three years of independent practice in the U.S.). Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Qualifications: Board certification in Neurology or equivalent clinical experience if required by the appointment (e.g., for faculty status). Experience in inpatient or outpatient neurology settings, including a history of managing complex neurological cases. Involvement in quality improvement, research, or educational activities related to neurology is preferred. Requirements U.S. citizenship or eligibility to be appointed under VA policy. Urinalysis screening for illegal drug use; refusal results in denial of employment. Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Subject to background/security investigation. Completion of an online onboarding process and acceptable identification (including REAL ID compliant driver’s license). Pass pre‑employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program. Probationary period may be required.
