Position Overview (Duties Include But Are Not Limited To)

• Perform work in support of the Optometry Service.
• Optometry Technician receives each patient and his/her medical record and in process each patient on the computer, records the reason for the Optometry visit and medical and visual history of each patient. Measures the distance and near visual acuities with and without glasses/contacts; measures the glasses prescriptions (to include all types of bifocals), records the results of measurements, records contact lens parameters, conducts an automatic refraction and records results.
• Conducts various color vision tests (PIP,100 Hue, D-15,etc), various depth perception test(Verhoeff, Randot, Stereo Circles,etc), monocular amplitude of accommodation test, and confrontation field test and records results.
• Conducts and records central and peripheral visual fields.
• Takes anterior and posterior ocular photographs for patient records
• Trains new contact lens patients on the insertion, removal, relocation and care of hard and soft contact lens.
• Identifies ocular emergencies and refers to the attending Optometrist.
• Identifies Ocular burns and begins irrigation immediately.
• Prepares spectacle orders from the Optometrist's prescription to include transposing prescriptions, selecting the proper frame size, and style, proper bifocal and bifocal height and decentration, proper temple size and places order on the computer for transmission to the optical fabrication laboratory.
• Adjusts and repairs military eyewear using optical tools and heating units.
• Assist medical clerk in clinical and appointment functions of CHCS.
• Register patients for clinic visits, making patient appointments, recording telephone messages.
• Assists medical clerk with patient check in and appointments as needed.
• Files patient records, prescriptions and eyewear within the clinic.
• Uses Spectacle Request Transmittal System to order eyewear.
• Responsible for use and proper working condition of special equipment used by Optometrist.
• Perform limited first echelon maintenance and minor repair, otherwise arranges for maintenance services, examples of equipment include, Autorefractor, Non-Contact Tonometer, Lensmeter and other routine medical equipment.
• Assist with ordering expendable and non-expendable supplies used in the Optometry clinic.
• Assures adequate stocking of supplies in clinic exam/screening rooms.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required.
• Completion an Optometry Technician course certified by the American Optometric Association.
• Must have certification as a Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA), this requirement may be waived by the Department Chief on a case by case basis.
• Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience within the last two (2) years as an Optometry Technician.
• Current Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA) through in-classroom training.
• Must have knowledge of ocular anatomy, ophthalmic optics, refractive conditions, eye pathology and ocular emergencies.
• Must have the ability to triage and handle ocular emergencies.
• Must have the ability to operate numerous instruments to conduct diagnostics eye test.
• Must have the ability and knowledge to correctly apply diagnostic ophthalmic pharmaceuticals to patient's eye.
• Must have the ability to operate optical hand equipment for adjustment and measurement of eye wear and contacts.
• Must have the ability to use computers for ordering eye wear an patient processing.
• Must have the knowledge, skill and ability to adapt techniques and established procedures to particular assignments.
• Must have the ability to recognize commonly encountered test results or patient reactions that indicate a need for further evaluation.
