Structural Engineer

Duration: 06 - 12 months contract Pay range: $35 to $42 an hour on W2 (Depends on experience & qualification). Shift Schedule: Standard shift Location: Remote with some travel (approximately 15%) in Birmingham, AL 35243

This position will be based out of the Energy Center, Birmingham, AL. This position will require a mix of both field and office work. Office work can be performed remotely (Telework/work from home) with the expectation that you can successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.

Job Summary

The position is responsible for structural design work supporting client’s Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group as well as providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group. The engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations etc. with an emphasis on safety quality, scheduling, and costs. The position will require some travel (approximately 15%) and will require the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service when not in the office.

Major Job Responsibilities Include:

• Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
• Prepare high quality calculation and design packages needed to construct substation and transmission line facilities using CAD-based tools, based on client’s design standards.
• The Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or modified existing substation structures. The Engineer will be expected to perform reinforced concrete design and structural steel analysis/design on an as needed basis. The Engineer will work with other engineers to help in their development and knowledge transfer.
• Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.
• Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and client’s committee members to resolve standards and material issues.
• Provide support to Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance.
• Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel may be required.
• Participate in design review meetings.
• Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
• Support client’s design criteria and standardization effort.
• Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required.
• Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification or Professional Engineering License preferred.

Experience:

• 5 plus years of experience in structural steel and concrete design required.
• Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering required.
• Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis is preferred.
• Prior foundation design experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes.
• Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.
• Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design.
• Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro.
• Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools.
• Experience with analyzing steel connections.
• Experience in reinforced concrete design.
• Design experience in transmission line structures and/or foundations is a plus but not required.
