Summary The ASPCA’s Community Medicine team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their owners through stationary and mobile clinics in underserved areas of New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. Who we are We deliver quality services directly to communities that need them most, partially or fully subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive care. Our team of over 1,000 dedicated colleagues works with deep knowledge, skills, and passion for the animals we serve. What you’ll do Help animals in need by providing essential veterinary services to pets and rescue animals. Perform physical examinations, diagnostics, treatment recommendations, and deliver care during clinic days. Conduct pre‑surgery physical exams for all surgical candidates. Perform 25–40 high‑quality spay/neuter procedures per day at stationary or mobile clinics. Diagnose and treat post‑surgical complications. Perform and oversee minor outpatient surgical procedures. Maintain a safe and compassionate environment using low‑stress handling techniques. Triage and refer cases outside CM’s care parameters. Perform humane euthanasia in line with ASPCA policy and CM protocols. What you’ll get Compensation The target hiring range for this role is $148,000 – $156,000. Work Schedule and Location This is typically an 8‑hour schedule with occasional overtime. Positions are primarily located at Brooklyn, Bronx, or mobile clinics throughout the Greater New York City area, and require flexibility in reporting location. Responsibilities Provide compassionate, quality preventive and basic care to patients, overseeing all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day. Perform and supervise outpatient and minor surgical procedures. Ensure a safe, low‑stress environment for animals, staff, and clients. Communicate effectively with clients, discussing examination, test results, and treatment plans. Client Service Communicate with clients in a non‑judgmental, professional manner. Counsel owners on end‑of‑life and other sensitive medical concerns. Provide discharge instructions and oversee medication dispensing. Administrative/Teamwork Document findings, test results, and treatment recommendations per ASPCA guidelines. Collaborate and foster communication with ASPCA colleagues. Participate in training of staff and students. Assist in scope of services and protocol development. Support research and development initiatives. Participate in monthly virtual rounds, workshops, and meetings. Optional travel opportunities to assist with large‑scale disaster or cruelty cases. Qualifications New York State veterinary license (new graduates welcome). Fear Free Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire. Knowledge and use of low‑stress handling techniques. Ability to efficiently perform physical examinations, outpatient surgeries, and diagnose/treat cats and dogs. Sound clinical judgement and resilience. Displays care and concern for safety and well‑being in stressful situations. Ability to stand for 8+ hours and navigate confined spaces and stairs. Willingness to commute to various locations in the New York area. Ability to exemplify ASPCA core values and behavioral competencies. Education and Work Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine required; new graduates will receive structured mentorship. Experience in high‑quality, high‑volume spay/neuter preferred. Experience in general small animal practice or shelter medicine preferred. Language English (Required). Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred.
