Assistant Attorney General – Law Enforcement and Special Prosecutions Division The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all state officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 22 legal divisions within 6 sections. About the Division The Law Enforcement and Special Prosecutions Division (LESP) is part of the Civil Law Section of the Attorney General’s Office. LESP advises the State’s law enforcement and corrections entities, and it defends them in most types of civil litigation, as it also does for state judicial officials, prosecutors, and public defenders. Along with civil defense, LESP investigates and prosecutes certain civil enforcement actions, forfeitures, and ousters, as well as all matters within the Attorney General’s limited criminal jurisdiction. LESP is proud to represent public servants committed to upholding the rule of law and the criminal justice system. This high-volume practice area offers attorneys the unique opportunity to master both civil and criminal law in a litigation context. LESP’s assignments include complex, high-profile cases with novel and significant issues. This division strives to produce excellent work‑product in a collegial and collaborative environment, while also encouraging personal development away from work. Job Overview The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Attorney General include, but are not limited to, the following: Developing case strategy and communicating that strategy to the client agency Collaborating with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff Analyzing documentary and related evidence and developing legal theories Reviewing court filings and internal memoranda for accuracy and clarity Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and other court documents Interviewing potential witnesses and taking testimony Promoting the office’s core values of “civility, client-focused, collaboration, disciplined, and integrity.” Preferred Candidate Qualifications Three to five years of civil litigation experience Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize assignments Ability to collaborate as part of an overall team Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing and executive communicationActive Tennessee law license in good standing How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, resume, contact information for at least 3 references, your law school transcript and a legal writing sample via our online applicant portal.
