Software Controls Engineer

This role plays a key part in bringing automated storage solutions to life by developing and implementing control software. You will focus on PLC and HMI programming while supporting system integration, testing, and onsite commissioning to ensure full system functionality.

The work centers around large-scale automated storage systems, including pallet shuttle technology, along with supporting equipment such as conveyors and lifts. Projects range from mid-sized to large capital systems, typically spanning $1M to $30M in value.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and program PLC and HMI applications using standardized architecture and templates.
• Support system integration efforts across engineering, project management, sales, and commissioning teams.
• Contribute to functional design specifications that define system operation and performance.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including SOPs and user manuals.
• Test, troubleshoot, and validate electrical and mechanical system performance.
• Collaborate with integration teams during WCS testing and system validation.
• Assist in system optimization, including simulation and performance improvements.
• Support development of test plans alongside commissioning teams.
• Participate in onsite activities including installation support, system validation, and final commissioning.
• Execute Site Acceptance Testing and support final system handoff to the customer.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Automation, Electrical, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Several years of experience in controls engineering within industrial automation or material handling environments.
• Strong PLC and HMI programming experience (Siemens preferred; Allen-Bradley experience also applicable).
• Experience working with structured text-based programming languages such as SCL.
• Ability to continuously improve system performance, code quality, and hardware integration.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities in real-world automation environments.

Additional Details:

• Travel is required, averaging up to 30% , typically in durations of up to two weeks at a time across the United States, with occasional travel to Canada.
• Initial onboarding and training may include travel to both U.S. and international locations.
• This role involves collaboration with international teams, requiring alignment with earlier work hours to support cross-time-zone communication.
