Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology The Woodruff School graduates high caliber mechanical engineers for a demanding profession. Mechanical engineers are the foundation of today's technological world. To do so, we provide enhanced facilities and laboratories to create the best learning environment, and we attract outstanding faculty and students. In this period of rapid technological change, the Woodruff School produces mechanical engineers who are vital to our future. We also host a vibrant nuclear and radiological engineering program, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. With approximately 3,000 students,100 faculty members, and 70 staff members, we are one of the largest mechanical engineering programs in the country. We are consistently ranked as one of the top 5 mechanical engineering programs in the U.S. at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and continuously innovate to keep our school at the forefront of engineering education. Job Summary We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Computational fluid dynamics and/or computational aerosol transport Monte Carlo radiation transport Internal dosimetry, biokinetic modeling, PBPK modeling, and/or dose reconstruction Scientific machine learning and/or artificial intelligence Reduced-order modeling and/or uncertainty quantification Scientific software development Responsibilities Conduct independent computational research while contributing to multiple sponsored research projects. Develop and validate computational models using computational fluid dynamics, Monte Carlo radiation transport, mechanistic modeling, machine learning, and/or related numerical methods. Design and execute computational studies using high-performance computing resources. Develop and maintain scientific software using reproducible software engineering practices, including version control, documentation, and testing. Analyze computational results and communicate findings through publications, sponsor reports, and technical presentations. Assist with proposal development, project coordination, and laboratory research activities. Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers. Conduct independent research in computational radiation science and engineering using computational modeling, numerical simulation, and scientific software development. Develop, implement, and validate computational models for radiation transport, computational fluid dynamics, aerosol transport, internal dosimetry, biokinetics, atmospheric dispersion, consequence assessment, and/or related multiphysics applications. Develop scientific software, computational workflows, and analysis tools using modern programming practices and high-performance computing resources. Contribute to the development and application of machine learning, reduced-order models, uncertainty quantification, and/or physics-informed artificial intelligence methods. Prepare peer-reviewed journal publications, technical reports, conference presentations, and research proposals. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to the scientific direction of the RED Laboratory. Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams across academia, national laboratories, industry, and government. Required Qualifications A Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computational Science, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in computational modeling, numerical methods, and/or scientific computing. Experience programming in Python and/or C++, Fortran, Julia, or another scientific programming language. Experience working in Linux computing environments and/or high-performance computing systems. Strong publication record demonstrating independent research. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computational fluid dynamics and/or computational aerosol transport Monte Carlo radiation transport Internal dosimetry, biokinetic modeling, PBPK modeling, and/or dose reconstruction Scientific machine learning and/or artificial intelligence Reduced-order modeling and/or uncertainty quantification Scientific software development Experience with OpenFOAM, STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent, MCNP, PHITS, Geant4, OpenMC, MELCOR, MACCS, or similar computational software. Experience developing scalable scientific software for high-performance computing applications. Experience with Bayesian inference, probabilistic methods, and/or statistical modeling. Experience applying machine learning and/or physics-informed artificial intelligence to engineering or biomedical applications. Familiarity with Git, automated software testing, and collaborative software development. Experience preparing peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and competitive research proposals. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities The ability to mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate level, while also collaborating with academic and industry partners. Excellent documentation and reporting skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports and presentations.
