Job Description
The Maintenance Technician maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide range of production machinery and facility systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations in a food manufacturing and packaging environment. This role performs preventive maintenance, responds to equipment issues, and collaborates closely with production teams to keep equipment running at optimal performance.
Responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair production machinery including mixers, saws, conveyors, box makers, sealers, fryers, freezers, Raytheon machines, forklifts, separators, and baggers.
• Perform routine lubrication by oiling and greasing production equipment to keep machines operating at optimal levels.
• Work on and repair control valves, conveyor systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, motors, gear boxes, presses, compressors, and related components.
• Respond promptly to production equipment malfunctions reported by line supervisors and perform timely repairs.
• Test operate production machinery before and after repairs to verify safe and proper functioning.
• Inspect and maintain all production equipment as needed and according to preventive maintenance schedules.
• Operate drills, saws, grinders, welding apparatus, presses, and a variety of manual tools to repair and maintain production equipment.
• Monitor and maintain building and grounds functions, including plumbing, general electrical wiring, and painting.
• Communicate repair status, potential problems, and overall equipment condition to line supervisors and incoming maintenance shifts.
• Prepare and submit requests for parts and materials needed to complete repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Record and maintain detailed documentation of maintenance work performed and keep an accurate logbook of daily activities.
• Coordinate maintenance efforts with external machinery technicians to support timely and proper repairs.
• Adjust equipment settings as requested by line supervisors to help machine operators achieve accurate operation of precision production equipment.
• Follow safety procedures and best practices while working around moving machinery, electrical systems, and industrial equipment.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing industrial production machinery such as mixers, saws, conveyors, box makers, sealers, fryers, freezers, forklifts, separators, and baggers.
• Practical experience working on hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and repair.
• Practical experience working on pneumatic systems, including troubleshooting and repair.
• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting conveyor systems.
• Experience working with control valves, motors, gear boxes, presses, and compressors.
• Proficiency in preventive maintenance practices, including inspection, lubrication, and scheduled servicing of equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving mechanical and basic electrical issues.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints or technical diagrams related to machinery and systems.
• Experience with basic electrical work related to production and facility equipment.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, presses, and welding apparatus safely and effectively.
• Previous experience in packaging operations or food manufacturing environments.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work safely in a loud, fast-paced industrial environment with exposure to moving machinery and industrial equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in food manufacturing or packaging operations, with familiarity of production lines and related equipment.
• Comfort working with compressors, control valves, and industrial utilities in a plant environment.
• Experience documenting maintenance activities and maintaining logbooks or maintenance records.
• Ability to coordinate with external technicians or vendors to support specialized repairs.
• Strong communication skills to clearly update supervisors and teammates on repair status and equipment condition.
• Detail-oriented approach to equipment adjustments and calibration to support precise production requirements.

Work Environment
This role is for second shift with three openings available, working Monday through Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The position is based in a food manufacturing plant with active production lines and industrial equipment. The work environment includes exposure to loud noise, food-grade dust and odors, moving and vibrating machinery, heavy equipment, powered industrial trucks, heights, traffic, anhydrous ammonia, oil, and electricity. Employees may also encounter adverse weather conditions such as extreme cold or heat, rain, snow, dust, smoke, and odors when working in or around the facility. The plant handles multiple food allergens, including fish, shellfish, nuts, eggs, wheat, soy, milk, and coconut, and employees must be comfortable working in an environment where these allergens are present.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $33.00/hr.
