Communications Intern

The Communications Department is looking for an SMSD Junior or Senior who is interested in journalism, marketing, public relations, communications and/or social media. The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with sharp attention to detail and very organized! This position is a great opportunity to explore the basics of journalism, content creation, and community relations. The candidate will be boots on the ground across the district to help tell our community's story. There are interesting and inspiring events/programs happening every day in SMSD. We have incredible staff and students who deserve to be recognized. Our goal is to show the community the positive happenings in our schools by telling stories across social platforms.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned

• The intern will cover events, programs and people as a content creator and reporter.
• Gather information accurately for written content.
• Take compelling photos and videos.
• Write captions for digital content.
• Assist in podcast production including transcriptions and promotional development.
• Contribute to district publications such as Inside Shawnee Mission.
• Work with the multimedia specialist to determine the most appropriate platforms for publication and variation of content.
• Design creative graphics in Canva or Adobe.
• Ability to communicate well, verbally and in writing, with staff and students to share a clear and consistent message to multiple audiences.
• Ability to speak in front of large and/or small groups.
• Developed organizational skills to manage many events and different forms of platforms.
• Ability to meet deadlines and have exceptional time management skills.
• Responsive communicator.
• Creative storyteller-able to think outside the box and able to adapt to the constantly changing social media trends.
• Knowledge of the geographical layout of the district is preferred and the ability to comprehensively read maps.
• Ability to use Canva, Adobe Suite, Google drive and docs, TikTok, Facebook, X, Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn.
• Other duties as assigned

Education And/Or Experience (Required And Preferred)

• High School Junior or Senior

• Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, in relation to department duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to speak in front of large and/or small groups.
• Bilingual communication skills preferred.
