Assistant Mechanic
The Assistant Mechanic supports the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles by performing preventative maintenance, safety inspections, basic diagnostics, and entry-level repairs. This role works closely with experienced mechanics on more complex repairs to ensure all fleet vehicles remain safe, compliant, and operational. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break, with overtime available and occasional on-call responsibilities during snow periods.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive 80-point safety inspections on fleet vehicles to ensure reliability and compliance.
- Complete preventative maintenance services, including oil and fluid changes, filter replacements, chassis and fitting lubrication, tire rotation and balancing, and tire replacement.
- Perform basic automotive diagnostics and entry-level repairs on fleet vehicles.
- Repair and maintain brake systems, mufflers, exhaust systems, and other mechanical components under guidance as needed.
- Assist senior mechanics with complex repairs and physically demanding tasks, including larger projects and advanced diagnostics.
- Support tire services such as tire changes, tire repair, and monitoring and adjusting tire pressure.
- Use hand tools and basic automotive equipment safely and effectively in daily repair and maintenance activities.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in the automotive shop and fleet maintenance areas.
- Accurately document all completed maintenance, inspections, and repairs in the appropriate systems or forms.
- Work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions as required by fleet maintenance operations.
- Participate in a fast-paced maintenance operation supporting a diverse fleet of university vehicles.
- Follow established safety procedures, maintenance standards, and fleet operating guidelines at all times.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 1 year of automotive service, maintenance, or repair experience, including tasks such as oil changes, tire changes, and use of hand tools.
- Hands-on experience performing preventative maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, and basic brake work.
- Ability to perform basic automotive diagnostics and repairs on fleet vehicles.
- Experience working with tires, including tire service, tire changes, tire repair, and monitoring tire pressure.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to work on brake systems, mufflers, exhaust systems, and other mechanical components.
- Comfort assisting senior mechanics with larger repair projects and physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to lift 25+ pounds and perform physical work throughout the day.
- Comfort working in both indoor shop environments and outdoor areas in varying weather conditions.
- Valid drivers license and ability to meet insurability requirements under driving standards.
- Proficiency using common hand tools and basic automotive equipment safely.
- Basic understanding of automotive electrical and mechanical systems.
- Attention to detail and ability to accurately document maintenance and repair work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- ASE Certification (Automotive Service Excellence) is a preferred qualification.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and automotive systems used in fleet maintenance environments.
- Interest in working in a fleet maintenance environment with exposure to a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Willingness to learn advanced diagnostics and repairs by working alongside experienced mechanics.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced maintenance operation supporting university fleet vehicles.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with technicians and mechanics.

Work Environment
This role is based in an automotive shop and fleet maintenance environment that supports university fleet vehicles. Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions depending on maintenance needs and fleet operations. The setting is fast-paced, with a consistent flow of preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs across numerous vehicle types and equipment. Team members use standard automotive tools and equipment, including hand tools, diagnostic devices, and tire service equipment. The schedule is generally structured Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break, and overtime opportunities with on-call responsibilities during snow periods. Employees are expected to follow appropriate safety practices and wear suitable shop attire and protective gear as required for working in an active maintenance facility.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.19 - $20.19/hr.
