Sergeant Position at Wentworth Institute of Technology Police Department
The Wentworth Institute of Technology Police Department is seeking applicants for a vacant role of Sergeant. The Sergeant will support and emulate the mission, core values, and goals of Wentworth by providing a safe campus for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position is expected to support the Wentworth community by:

- Providing a full range of law enforcement and security services
- Investigating calls, complaints, and suspicious activity and incidents
- Enforcing laws, maintaining order, and assisting people
- Identifying criminal activity, apprehending offenders, and identifying the source of problems
- Working with other law enforcement agencies to resolve issues
- Supporting the department's mission by respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals while completing the functions of their job
This position will work both independently and cooperatively to provide proactive police protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing standards. This position will ensure the safety of the Wentworth community in an orderly, efficient, and professional manner. It is expected that the officer will conduct investigations of issues and crimes that lead to identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders.
The Sergeant will determine the necessary and appropriate actions needed to resolve problems and supervise police officers, dispatchers, and community service officers. The Sergeant is responsible for overseeing the operations of the university's emergency alert, radio, alarm, access control, phone, and fire protection systems. The Sergeant may act as incident commander during campus emergencies until relieved by another supervisor or appropriate superior and must possess the ability to respond and take charge in emergency situations.
Essential Functions:
1. (40%) Supervise all functions and personnel assigned to the shift, including monitoring and following up on police response to routine and emergency calls. Direct crime prevention activities and assign officers to respond to crimes, unauthorized persons, and emergencies. Respond and take charge in emergency situations and issue emergency alerts to the Wentworth community. Direct patrol activities on foot, bicycle, and vehicle. Distribute assignments and review work performed. Supervise dispatch operations and maintain key control. Oversee emergency alert, radio, alarm, access control, phone, and fire protection systems. Conduct and supervise investigations, maintain records, and approve reports and shift paperwork.
2. (30%) Enforce criminal laws, policies, rules, and regulations in a fair and consistent manner. Interact with the public in a responsive, non-escalatory way when warning, citing, or arresting individuals. Patrol buildings and grounds to protect life and property and deter crime. Respond to emergency situations such as alarms and accidents. Investigate criminal complaints and policy violations. Take appropriate action on observed violations of university rules. Direct accident and disaster response, render aid, and restore order. Assist other law enforcement agencies. Operate vehicles, firearms, radios, and related equipment.
3. (10%) Manage parking operations during shift. Coordinate with the Parking and ID Office. Ensure enforcement of parking regulations and proper ticket processing. Maintain fire lanes and orderly parking conditions.
4. (10%) Provide police and security services for special events and VIP visits, including commencement and large campus events. Coordinate with local, state, and transit police. Participate in crime prevention and public safety training. Collaborate with university departments, students, faculty, and staff. Perform other duties as assigned.
5. (10%) Provide testimony in court and serve as a witness in disciplinary proceedings as needed. Maintain all required certifications and qualifications. Participate in departmental and university training programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of 10 years of law enforcement experience at the rank of police officer or above
- Ability to obtain and maintain Massachusetts POST certification and SSPO Warrant of Appointment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Massachusetts license to carry a firearm
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background check (criminal, driving, medical, psychological, and drug screening)
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Massachusetts POST certification
- Graduate of a Full-Time MPTC or Massachusetts State Police Academy (or equivalent)
- MPTC Instructor certification (CPR, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, etc.)
- Field Training Officer experience
Position Details:
The job grade for this position is Grade 7N.
The expected hourly rate for this position is between 36.41 - 50.77 USD Hourly, which reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role.
