Staff Engineer

The Staff Engineer is a technical expert responsible for leading the embedded design, development, and optimization of embedded software for our next-generation air-conditioner products.

This role will drive architecture decisions, solve complex technical problems, and provide technical leadership across projects, working closely with hardware, system, and production teams. The lead is expected to act as a go-to person for critical technical topics, mentor other engineers, and help ensure our products meet global quality, reliability, and cybersecurity standards.

This position is based onsite at Carrier - Indianapolis, 30 South Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Upon the successful completion of an initial onsite training and onboarding period (typically 4–6 weeks), this role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. This arrangement requires a minimum of three (3) days per week onsite, with the option to work remotely for up to two (2) days per week.

Role Responsibilities:

• Design and implement embedded software solutions to address business needs.
• Experience with Microcontrollers, RTOS and Embedded Protocols.
• Develop firmware in C/C++, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and safety.
• May have responsibility for the programming of assembly language, machine language and high-level languages, including but not limited to C and C++.
• Involve in all aspects of the system software development process – concept, design, reviews, coding and validation.
• Drive code quality initiatives through best practices including code reviews, unit tests, functional/integration testing, and CI/CD integration.
• Provide software designs and documentation to the team.
• Participate in product cybersecurity reviews.
• Participate in Change Control Board (CCB) meetings to prioritize new features & defects.
• Perform debugging, troubleshooting embedded systems using emulators, JTAG/BDM debuggers etc.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and apply relevant innovations as appropriate.
• Work with embedded system development methodologies such as agile, and related project and repo management tools such as JIRA, Confluence, GitHub etc.
• Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and review feedback.
• Directs the activities related to the analysis, design, programming, debugging, troubleshooting and modification of software for firmware (IC embedded code) applications.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or Computer Science, or a technical discipline degree.
• 7+ years of experience in the design and development of embedded firmware.

Pay Range:

The annual salary for this position is between $96,000.00 - $192,000.00 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.

Other Compensation:

This position is entitled to short-term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.
