Adult Psychiatric Division/Forensic Psychiatric Technician

Posting Details The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI) provides comprehensive behavioral health services across six divisions, including inpatient psychiatric care for civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for individuals with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long‑term care. NMBHI serves over 250 patients daily on inpatient/residential units and approximately 400 outpatient clients per month, employing more than 600 staff across all divisions. Salary and Pay Band Hourly: $18.15 – $27.23 Annual: $37,752 – $56,628 Pay Band: C3 Why the Job Exists The psychiatric technician provides direct care and assistance to all patients within the hospital units. This role supports nursing and treatment staff by assisting patients with basic needs and communicating updates on symptoms and functioning to the treatment team. How it Gets Done Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living, cuing them to eat, shower, and attend activities. Support patients in crisis situations and help de‑escalate agitation. Monitor all patients and ensure safety by conducting checks at identified intervals, including one‑to‑one checks. Provide feedback to nursing staff and the treatment team regarding observed symptoms. Maintain a clean and comfortable environment for all patients. Ideal Candidate Experience working with individuals who have behavioral health diagnoses. Experience assisting people with activities of daily living. Experience working in healthcare settings. Experience collaborating with treatment teams. Minimum Qualification High school diploma and one (1) year of experience related to the essential duties of this classification. One year of relevant experience may be substituted with an equivalent combination of accredited college/university education and direct experience. Employment Requirements Valid driver’s license. Defensive driving certificate. Safety‑sensitive position: subject to pre‑employment and random testing, drug/alcohol testing, nationwide criminal background checks, and HIPAA compliance. Working Conditions This position is performed in a psychiatric hospital setting, providing care to patients with mental illness who may present unpredictable behavior. Exposure to visual display terminals and telephone/PC usage is typical.
