Reading Anthracite is part of a closely held network of 20+ private companies with common ownership serving multiple industrial end-markets, including energy and power solutions, construction, fabrication, commercial lubricants, engineering, etc. In addition to its core operations, the Reading Anthracite team provides shared general and administrative services across the broader enterprise—supporting functions such as finance and accounting, human resources, risk management, legal and compliance coordination, IT, procurement, and other corporate services—to drive consistency, efficiency, and strong governance across the platform. This position would be located out of the Pottsville, PA office and reports to the Controller.

JOB OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our accounting team. This position owns the complete month-end close for a portfolio of the enterprise’s smaller operating companies, from general ledger through financial statement preparation, and is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of those companies’ financial records. This person would also occasionally assist with various tasks at the direction of the Controller for the larger coal and energy producing entities. The ideal candidate has approximately three years of progressive accounting experience, is comfortable taking full ownership of a close cycle without day-to-day supervision, and is looking to grow their career within a stable, closely held organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own the complete month-end and year-end close for an assigned portfolio of smaller operating companies, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and cut-off.
• Prepare complete internal financial statement packages, including balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows for smaller operating companies
• Review variances and fluctuations over-period of time and changes in financial results.
• Own balance sheet account reconciliations, including cash and bank, accounts receivable, accounts payable, prepaids, accruals, and intercompany accounts and transfers. Investigate, resolve, and clear reconciling items rather than carrying them forward, and escalate aged or unusual items.
• Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts, including review and correction of transaction coding.
• Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules, including additions, disposals, and reconcile the fixed asset subledger to the general ledger.
• Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for external auditors and respond to auditor requests.
• Support sales and use tax filings and other compliance reporting.
• Adhere to internal controls, and identify and escalate control gaps rather than working around them.
• Continually assist to improve processes, help in implementation of any new systems and reporting tools, and document close procedures so that they are repeatable and not dependent on any individual’s knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Approximately 3-4 years of progressive accounting experience.
• Experience in preparing financials statements (Balance sheet and income statement at minimum)
• Demonstrated ownership of a month-end close cycle.
• Solid understanding of accounting principles and practices, including general ledger accounting
• Proven account reconciliation experience, with the ability to independently research and resolve variances.
• Fixed asset and depreciation experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, lookups, and working with large data sets).
• Ability to learn a proprietary accounting system. The Company uses a custom system, and prior experience with any specific ERP is not required.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work with numbers accurately.
• Good organizational and time-management skills, with a consistent record of meeting close deadlines.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial results to individuals outside of the accounting function.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
• Sound judgment regarding materiality and when to escalate an issue.
• Discretion in handling confidential financial information.

Preferred, but not required:

• Multi-entity or intercompany accounting experience
• Experience in various industries
