ChargeTronix · Field-based (Southern California home base) · Full-time · Heavy travel. A senior DC fast-charger technician who is the escalation point for the hardest faults, commissions new sites, mentors Tier I/II techs, and owns uptime in the territory.

Who we are

ChargeTronix designs and builds modular DC fast chargers that are made to be serviced in the field, not shipped back to a factory. We stand behind every unit we install, which means our field team is the product as far as the customer is concerned. You will work on our own hardware, with a direct line to the engineers who designed it, and what you find in the field changes what we build next.

The role

This is the top electrical technical field position on the service team. A Tier II technician fixes what the ticket says. A Senior (Tier III) technician is the person Tier II calls when the fix does not work, the person who commissions a new site and signs off that it is ready to charge, and the person who turns a pattern of repeat faults into a root cause and a field bulletin.

You will be responsible for a territory's uptime, mentor junior technicians, act as the primary on-site contact for customers and site hosts, and feed structured failure data back to engineering. You work independently with little supervision and are trusted to make safety and repair judgment calls on site.

Reports to: Field Service Manager. No direct reports; technical lead for Tier I/II technicians in the territory.

What you'll do

Diagnose and repair (Tier III escalation)

• Resolve the DC fast-charger faults that Tier I/II could not: power electronics, control and communication boards, contactors, cooling systems, cable and connector assemblies, and vehicle interoperability failures.
• Repair at the component level where it is the right call (power modules, SECC/PD/MCU boards, power supplies, contactors, IGBTs, sensors) rather than defaulting to a full-unit swap.
• Read and interpret PLC, CAN, and OCPP logs to isolate root cause; capture evidence (logs, photos, meter readings) for engineering and warranty.
• Provide remote phone and video support to junior technicians on live sites.

Commission and test

• Commission new installations: verify incoming 480 V service, grounding and bonding, torque values, firmware, network and backend (OCPP) registration, and payment/authorization.
• Run acceptance charge tests across multiple vehicle platforms and connector types (CCS1, NACS, CHAdeMO), and sign off that a site is ready for service.
• Maintain and update the test-vehicle fleet (hardware, software, adapters) and run interoperability tests as new vehicles and NACS adapters enter the market.
• Execute field upgrade and retrofit campaigns (NACS cable and adapter retrofits, firmware rollouts, engineering change orders).

Own reliability in your territory

• Own uptime, mean time to repair, and first-time-fix rate for the sites in your territory, and report on them weekly.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to the ChargeTronix PM checklist and recommend changes to it.
• Spot repeat-fault patterns across sites, drive them to root cause, and write field service bulletins and work instructions so the fix scales.
• Manage truck stock and territory spares; tag and return failed parts with complete failure data for RMA and warranty.

Lead and mentor

• Train and ride along with Tier I/II technicians; sign off their readiness to work independently.
• Write and maintain SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and training material for the service team.
• Act as the primary on-site contact for customers, site hosts, electrical contractors, utilities, and inspectors; explain technical issues to non-technical people.

Safety

• Work as an NFPA 70E qualified person: perform job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, arc-flash risk assessment and PPE selection on every energized job.
• Hold stop-work authority and use it. Model safe work for junior technicians and site contractors.
• Perform all electrical work to NEC (including Article 625), local code, and manufacturer specification.

Document and communicate

• Complete an accurate field service report and close the ticket for every visit, same day.
• Communicate issues, delays, risks, and parts needs to the service manager proactively, with a proposed solution.
• Keep tools, test equipment, vehicle, and PPE calibrated, organized, and inspection-ready.
• Other duties as assigned.

What success looks like

• First 30 Days: Completed ChargeTronix product and safety onboarding; NFPA 70E qualified-person status current; working independently on Tier II tickets.
• First 90 Days: Handling Tier III escalations in the territory without engineering support on routine faults; first commissioning signed off; first field bulletin or SOP written.
• 6 Months: Territory uptime at or above the company target (97%+ measured per site); first-time-fix rate above 85%; at least one Tier I/II technician trained and signed off.
• 12 Months: Repeat-fault rate in the territory trending down with documented root causes; test-vehicle and NACS interoperability program running on a schedule; recognized by customers as their go-to contact.
• Targets: Targets are starting points and will be set with you in your first month.

What you bring (required)

Experience

• 5+ years of hands-on electrical or electromechanical field service, including 3+ years on EV charging equipment, with at least 2 years on DC fast chargers (50 kW and above).
• Demonstrated component-level repair on DCFC hardware (power modules, control/communication boards, contactors, cooling) and cable/connector replacement (CCS, NACS, CHAdeMO).
• Experience with 480 V three-phase systems and high-voltage DC; comfortable reading one-lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
• Track record of training or leading other technicians, or of writing procedures others follow.

Credentials (one of the following)

• California General Electrician Certification or a journeyman/master electrician license from another state; or
• EVITP certification; or
• 5+ years documented DCFC field service with component-level repair, and California Electrician Trainee (ET) registration obtained within 90 days of hire.

And all of the following

• NFPA 70E qualified-person training current, or completed within 60 days of hire (company-provided).
• OSHA 10 (OSHA 30 preferred).
• CPR/First Aid, including low-voltage rescue, current or completed within 60 days of hire (company-provided).
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; able to pass a background check and DOT-style medical clearance for a company vehicle.

Technical skills

• Working knowledge of NEC (Article 625 in particular), NFPA 70E, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S.
• Proficient with multimeters, clamp meters, insulation-resistance testers, and torque tools; able to use an oscilloscope or data logger when a fault calls for it.
• Able to read charger logs and communication traces (PLC, CAN) and identify where a charge session failed.
• Networking basics for connected chargers: Ethernet, cellular modems, Wi-Fi, RS-485, and backend connectivity troubleshooting.
• Comfortable with ticketing and CRM tools (Salesforce, Zendesk, or similar), Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and writing a clear field report.

How you work

• Independent and decisive on site, and knows when to call for help.
• Customer-first: calm with site hosts and drivers when a station is down, and clear when explaining what happened.
• Reliable under heavy travel; plans the week to maximize sites served per trip.

Nice to have

• Hands-on service on two or more DCFC platforms: ABB, Tritium, BTC Power, SK Signet, Kempower, Alpitronic, Autel, ChargePoint, Sinexcel, Tellus, Longhorn, Blink, Tesla.
• Working knowledge of OCPP 1.6J / 2.0.1, ISO 15118 and DIN 70121, and how a failed handshake shows up in logs.
• OEM manufacturer service certifications on any of the platforms above.
• Experience commissioning solar, battery storage, UPS, or other power-electronics equipment.
• Aerial lift or forklift certification.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.

Compensation, classification, travel and schedule

Pay: $75,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience, credentials, and platform depth. Per diem on travel days, and an on-call differential are paid in addition to base.

Classification: Full-time, exempt.

Travel: 75% or more. Multi-day regional trips by vehicle and periodic air travel out of state. Home base in Southern California; home most weekends.

Schedule: Monday to Friday standard hours, plus a paid on-call rotation for emergency dispatch and occasional weekend or after-hours work when a site is down. Technicians plan their own routes and workdays to serve the most sites per trip.

Physical requirements and work environment

• Regularly stands, walks, bends, kneels, stoops, crouches, climbs, and works from ladders or lifts.
• Frequently lifts and moves 50 lb; occasionally more with assistance or equipment (charger doors, power modules, cable assemblies).
• Works outdoors in all weather, in heat and cold, in noisy environments, and in confined cabinet spaces.
• Works around energized equipment up to 480 VAC and 1,000 VDC with appropriate PPE.
• Drives a company vehicle for extended periods and flies periodically.
• Close and color vision required to read displays, wiring, and indicator lights.
