MENTAL HEALTH PSYCHIATRIST/CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

Position Mental Health Psychiatrist – Correctional Health Services (Emergency) Exam Number: Y4735C-DOJ First Day of Filing: July 26, 2024, 8:00 a.m. PT Overview The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Mental Health Psychiatrist vacancies related to the DOJ Consent Decree. Applicants may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with the possibility of permanent County employment upon successful performance assessment. Under the emergency order, the County is offering a recruitment and retention bonus of up to 20% for full‑time Mental Health Psychiatrist positions hired by Correctional Health Services and working on‑site in a designated facility. Essential Job Functions Perform psychiatric evaluations and screens for health‑related concerns as needed. Develop comprehensive psychiatric treatment plans. Evaluate individuals/clients to determine probable cause for detention under WIC 5150. Provide clinical consultation to other medical providers and staff, including interns and resident physicians, regarding treatment interventions, medical and diagnostic work performed, and participate in clinical case conferences. Assist in the planning, direction, and implementation of departmental initiatives and protocols to enhance and improve client care. Perform medication support services by evaluating the need for psychotropic medications. Prescribe medications and monitor their overall effect and, when necessary, administer medication/s. Order, obtain, review, and monitor pertinent laboratory tests. Participate in evaluation of the quality of care and provide input into formulating corrective action plans to mitigate future clinical risk. Conduct academic and/or research activities. Conduct trainings or assist in the training of interns and resident physicians. Testify in court as an expert witness. Discuss patient information with relevant third parties, including attorneys, judges, and family members, following appropriate release of information or court order. Qualifications Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in psychiatry or equivalent training, as verified by a legible copy of the certificate of completion. California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California, active and unrestricted. Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out essential job functions. Physical requirement: Light physical effort, including occasional light lifting to a 10‑pound limit, bending, stooping or squatting, and considerable walking. Completion of a thorough background investigation, including fingerprint search. Applicants with disqualifying factors (e.g., felony convictions, certain serious traffic violations, substance abuse, probation) are disqualified.
