Software & Systems Engineering Manager

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead Tombot's Software & Systems organization. This team is responsible for firmware, robotics software, mobile applications, systems integration, software testing, manufacturing software, and supporting cloud-connected services that bring our robotic platforms to life. This role combines technical leadership, people leadership, engineering operations, and product execution. You will build and lead a high-performing engineering organization while partnering with the CTO and Technical Leads to establish technical direction, engineering processes, and release workflows. Responsibilities Lead Tombot's Software & Systems Engineering organization by fostering a collaborative culture centered on accountability, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and ownership. Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain engineers while planning team structure, capabilities, and hiring needs as the organization grows. Set clear expectations, provide ongoing feedback, address performance concerns, and hold team members accountable for commitments and results. Conduct performance reviews, establish development goals, and support career growth. Technical Leadership Partner with the CTO and Technical Leads to guide software architecture, system design, engineering standards, and complex hardware/software integration decisions, ensuring scalability, maintainability, reliability, and product quality. Establish and reinforce engineering best practices, code quality, documentation, testing, and continuous improvement. Provide technical judgment and escalation support for complex design, architecture, integration, and product-quality issues without serving as the team’s primary production coder. Product Delivery & Engineering Operations Lead software execution supporting EVT, DVT, PVT, manufacturing, and production. Manage the software release process, including release planning, governance, development workflows, and delivery commitments. Lead software release reviews with Software Testing and Technical Leads to ensure objective validation and high-quality software releases. Partner with Product and Project Management to balance scope, schedule, quality, and technical risk while removing obstacles to engineering execution. Lead engineering participation in customer issue investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous product improvement. Required Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience). 10+ years developing embedded software, robotics systems, or complex electromechanical products. 5+ years leading engineering teams or engineering organizations. Demonstrated success delivering embedded or electromechanical products from concept through EVT, DVT, PVT, manufacturing, and production. Strong technical background in embedded software development using C/C++. Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for firmware, embedded software, robotics, mobile applications, or systems integration. Strong understanding of embedded system architecture, software design, and hardware/software integration. Excellent leadership, communication, mentoring, and organizational skills. Strong technical judgment and problem-solving abilities. Preferred Qualifications Experience developing robotics, medical devices, consumer electronics, or other intelligent electromechanical products. Experience with regulated product development, including medical device design controls, verification and validation, risk management, or quality systems. Experience with ARM-based embedded systems and RTOS-based software development, including platforms such as STM32, ThreadX, or FreeRTOS. Experience integrating embedded software with mobile applications and cloud-connected services. Experience working in startup or rapidly growing technology companies. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, internal equity, and market factors. The base salary for this role is expected to be between $180,000 and $220,000 per year. In addition to cash compensation, this role may be eligible for equity awards, aligning individual impact with Tombot’s long-term success. Employees are expected to work onsite Monday through Thursday, with designated Flexible Fridays available for remote work. Occasional additional hours may be required to support product-development milestones, manufacturing needs, or critical releases.
