Maintenance Mechanic

Job Summary This position serves as a journeyman level Maintenance Mechanic within Engineering Service at WJB Dorn VA Medical Center - Columbia - South Carolina under the supervision of the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic. The maintenance mechanic performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct‑Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement (06/25/2026). Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must demonstrate training or experience of sufficient scope and quality; evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification will be considered for further rating; others are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: equipment assembly, installation, repair; interpret instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading); material and operation of equipment/machinery. Volunteer work through National Service programs or other organizations is also credited. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties, responsibilities, and the number of hours per week spent in each position. Physical Requirements The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May be asked to weld overhead or in other unusual positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, and legs, and from the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds. Working Conditions The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles. Duties Receives general supervision from the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic as to work schedules, operating policies and procedures. Maintains appropriate level of computer literacy to use the stations' engineering software package. Makes complete and difficult determinations of materials and methods to be employed. Determines welding techniques to use and selects proper materials such as the right size and type of welding electrodes or rods. Analyzes complex pipefitting problems and arrives at effective solutions. Can project and visualize pipefitting planning and installation problems. Determines extent of repairs, modifications, and installations needed and exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing assignments. Enforces the concepts of the National Electrical Code – particularly as it applies to medical facilities. Removes and replaces electrical fixtures and controls. Makes repairs. Rearranges old or installs new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures. Tests circuits. Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles.
