The Opportunity The Commodity Inspection Division provides unbiased third-party inspections for a wide variety of Washington State agricultural products and assists agricultural companies in the movement and exporting of their products. The division has roughly 365 full‑time employees across four statewide programs, including Fruit and Vegetable Inspection, Grain Inspection, Grain Warehouse Audit, and Seed Inspection and Certification. Position Overview This part‑time, non‑permanent Grain Sampler/Weigher position reports directly to a Grain Inspection Supervisor. The incumbent weighs and certifies grains and/or commodities, checks ship holds, containers, and other conveyances for fitness to load, works in railroad yards and grain elevators to draw samples, and performs mycotoxin testing and other analytical tests. Work locations include inspection offices in Seattle, Tacoma, Aberdeen, Longview, Kalama, Vancouver, Spokane, and Colfax. Responsibilities Sampling and Weighing Weigh, sample, and examine grain and agricultural commodities at mills, shipping points, grain elevators and other locations. Operate testing equipment in a laboratory. Operate hopper, platform, dial, and electronic scales to determine weights, record gross and tare weights, calculate net weights, and issue Domestic Official Weight Certificates. Maintain records and documentation of scale conditions and all weighing activities. Obtain samples from railcars, trucks, containers and other conveyances; move grain streams and vessel holds using standardized sample collection equipment. Work in railroad yards and other hazardous areas, opening and closing container doors, recording on sample tickets container condition, identification, and seal numbers. Sample, check weighs, and check loads in shipping containers for compliance with government contracts. Sample commodities and grains for inspection and phytosanitary certification, sample grass seed for phytosanitary certification, and sample products and/or weigh commodities under directions issued by USDA agencies. Drive agency vehicle to perform exams and inspections. Protein and Mycotoxin Testing Conduct protein and mycotoxin testing on grains and commodities. Operate specialized grain inspection equipment to determine protein, mycotoxins, falling numbers, dockage, moisture, test weight per bushel, and other mechanical determinations using approved equipment, computers, and procedures. Stowage Examinations Perform stowage examinations on containers, vessels, and other conveyances for fitness to load grains and commodities. Check ship holds, containers, and other conveyances for fitness to grain cargo and issue ship sanitation certificates in compliance with state and federal regulations, and perform observations of fumigation. Drive agency vehicle to perform exams and inspections. Requirements Must acquire and maintain a valid driver’s license to travel on agency business. Must acquire a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Must pass a background check for Customs and Border Protection to allow boarding of vessels prior to Customs and Border Protection personnel.
