About the Facility – Palo Alto VAMC

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital associated with the Stanford University School of Medicine. It provides patient care services as well as education and research. Health care is provided in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. 1,300 University residents, interns, and students are trained annually. VAPAHCS operates nearly 900 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary serving more than 85,000 enrolled veterans. Facility Address: 3801 Miranda Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94304

Responsibilities

• Receive patients and explain procedures, providing human and appropriate care and communication to alleviate the fear of examination. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make necessary adjustments for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
• Operate facility-provided ultrasound scanners. Operate linear, sector, endovaginal, and 3D transducers as well as pulse and color Doppler capabilities of providing scanners.
• Receive and interpret requests or instructions for diagnostic ultrasound scans; perform daily warm-up and assigned quality control checks of the ultrasound scanners. Ensure arrival of patients, schedule appointments, depart patients, prepare and process examination requests and related records, digitally upload diagnostic imaging files and reports to Picture Archiving and Communications System, create compact disks with diagnostic images, send and receive faxes, complete administrative logs. Enter and maintain data and radiology information systems and PACS.
• Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations including but not limited to: abdominal, superficial, aorta, carotid, breast, upper and lower extremity deep vein thrombosis, and pelvic sonography exams, including imaging of all pelvic anatomy to attain accurate assessment of suspected pathology; and endovaginal sonography exams to obtain an accurate assessment of suspected pelvic pathology.
• Identify abnormalities during testing and determine the need for additional scans of the affected area.
• Recognize anatomic variants and determine which other area(s) of the body should be scanned.
• Use a detailed understanding of diseases of anatomy to accomplish effective ultrasound scanning.
• Advise the radiologist of the results of the examination and provide them with a preliminary diagnosis.
• Notify radiologists of significant scans requiring immediate attention.
• Maintain and clean ultrasound equipment on a regular basis in accordance with Radiology department standards. Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required for ultrasound examinations. Supplies will be acquired from the department supply closet or requested through the supply custodian. Recommend the necessary monthly repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
• Make minor adjustments to equipment. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment, set up the machine, and scanning techniques to be employed.
• Responsible for funding and maintaining continuing education units to maintain status as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by ARDMS.
• Attend and participate in meetings, official Medical Group Functions, and professional staff meetings.
• Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduation from a medical sonography training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
• Current registration as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Inc. (ARDMS).
• A Minimum of one year full-time experience within the last 2 years in a clinical or hospital setting, and ultrasound scanning competence in the exams specified within the core duties. Possess and maintain a Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
