Construction Inspector

The Construction Inspector performs field and laboratory testing on soils, concrete, and construction materials to ensure that infrastructure projects meet required specifications and quality standards. This role is ideal for an entry-level candidate who wants to build a long-term career in construction inspection, materials testing, and project engineering within a growing, employee-owned engineering environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform nuclear density gauge testing on soil and backfill to verify compaction levels.
• Verify that soil and backfill meet project compaction requirements and document any deviations.
• Test trench backfill for construction projects to ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Determine moisture content of soils using appropriate field and laboratory methods.
• Perform concrete slump tests to assess workability and consistency of concrete mixes.
• Measure and record concrete temperatures to confirm compliance with project and material requirements.
• Cast and prepare concrete compression test cylinders for laboratory strength testing.
• Verify that construction materials meet project specifications and applicable standards.
• Document test results clearly and accurately, maintaining detailed records of all field and lab activities.
• Prepare and provide test reports to project teams in a timely and professional manner.
• Upload field data into reporting systems and ensure data accuracy and completeness.
• Support quality control inspection activities for construction projects, including soils, concrete, and asphalt testing.
• Collaborate with project engineering and construction teams to communicate findings and support project decisions.
• Handle construction materials safely and in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.

Essential Skills

• Experience or training in construction inspection, materials testing, or related construction activities.
• Knowledge of basic construction practices and materials handling.
• Ability to perform concrete testing, including slump tests, temperature measurements, and cylinder preparation.
• Understanding of quality control inspection principles for soils, concrete, and asphalt testing.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid drivers license and ability to travel to various job sites.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Basic math skills for measurements, calculations, and data interpretation.
• Basic computer skills for data entry and uploading field data into reporting systems.
• Effective communication skills to interact with project teams and document findings clearly.

Work Environment

The Construction Inspector spends approximately 90% of their time on active job sites and about 10% in the laboratory and office environment. The role primarily supports transportation and infrastructure projects, including work on PennDOT-related sites. The position involves working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, around active construction activities, and with testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and concrete testing tools. The laboratory and office portions of the job include preparing and testing material samples, entering data into reporting systems, and collaborating with project teams. Travel between job sites is required, and mileage is reimbursed. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bridgeville, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
