Physician - Psychiatry (Supervisory)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility requirements and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts up to $200,000 and eligibility periods of one to five years are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review. Former EDRP participants are ineligible. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. United States citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens can be recruited in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year the study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. Residency training meeting VA acceptance criteria (ACGME/ AOA accredited residency, post‑medical‑school internship followed by two years independent practice, or non‑US residency followed by three years US practice) or exception as a Physician Resident Provider (PRP) per criteria. Physician Resident Providers must be fully licensed physicians, appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements: primarily walking, sitting, talking, driving, telephone use; must withstand pressure and stress; exposure to individuals with psychiatric and physical illness, violent behavior; light lifting under 15 lbs; hearing aid permitted. Duties Performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population, including geriatric and post‑deployment combat veterans, individuals with homelessness, unemployment, and poor family support. Provides full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders. Ensures practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes, regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education. Provides psycho‑diagnostic services, assessment, and appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques to deliver quality care. May serve as mental health team leader with responsibilities for coordinating consults and triage of specialty clinic referrals. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care. Orders diagnostic tests and consultations, discriminates between normal and abnormal findings, and makes appropriate treatment decisions. May participate in supervision and teaching in support of the psychiatric residency program, perform on‑call duties, and perform other directly related duties as assigned. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (subject to change based on agency needs).
