Fleet Maintenance Manager

As Tractor Shop Manager, you will lead a skilled maintenance team to ensure reliable performance and safety across a diverse fleet of class 8 trucks and tractor trailers. This opportunity offers an impactful management role within a temperature-controlled shop environment, where operational excellence drives service quality for both internal and external customers. Responsibilities: Schedule, prioritize, and coordinate all maintenance and repair activities to optimize shop workflow. Provide hands‑on training, coaching, and oversight to technicians and shop helpers, ensuring skills development. Prepare accurate service reports and maintain essential documentation for all repairs and preventive maintenance. Ensure timely completion of repair jobs and preventive maintenance tasks to minimize vehicle downtime. Control and manage repair job costs through effective resource and vendor management. Communicate professionally with drivers, vendors, and internal teams to facilitate efficient operations. Enforce and champion compliance with company safety policies and industry regulations (including DOT standards). Travel to remote locations as needed to assess or resolve vehicle maintenance issues. Operate and interpret computerized diagnostic systems to support advanced repair and troubleshooting. Lead, develop, and mentor direct reports, including setting expectations, providing feedback, and conducting performance reviews. Maintain a respectful, fair, and trustworthy work environment; address concerns seriously and elevate when appropriate. Must-Have Skills: Extensive experience in fleet maintenance and preventive maintenance within heavy duty truck and tractor trailer environments. Strong hands‑on knowledge in diesel diagnostics and repair (including Cummins, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR engines). Proven ability to manage shop operations, maintenance scheduling, and technician team oversight. Expertise with maintenance planning, cost control, budget management, and vendor management for parts and services. Familiarity with DOT safety requirements and compliance procedures. Proficient in the use of fleet maintenance software and computerized diagnostic tools. Effective communication and documentation skills for reporting and workflow management. Nice-to-Have Skills: Experience working with fleet vehicles from brands such as Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks. Background in repair management and diagnostic operations for class 8 tractor trailers. Knowledge of scheduling solutions and advanced maintenance tracking systems. Ability to coach and cross‑train teams across multiple shop disciplines. Prior supervisory or performance management experience in a transportation-focused environment. Understanding of maintenance fluid safety procedures and shop environmental best practices.
