Facilities Plant Mechanic

The City of Gastonia is seeking a Facilities Plant Mechanic to perform technical and skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment in a water and/or wastewater treatment plant.

Positions available:

• Facilities Plant Mechanic I
• Facilities Plant Mechanic II
• Facilities Plant Mechanic III

Essential Functions/Duties:

Facilities Plant Mechanic I:

• Cleans, services and lubricates pumps, motors and related treatment equipment (15%)
• Dismantles and repairs various plant equipment such as gauges, grit collectors, conveyors, mechanical grinders, engines, blowers, gas and air compressors and chlorinators (20%)
• Performs complete overhauls of water and wastewater treatment machinery and equipment including chemical feeders, conveyors, chlorinators and pumps of all types (15%)
• Maintains and installs liquid chemical feed pumps (10%)
• Replaces control valves and valve position indicating lights (10%)
• Makes minor and emergency repairs (10%)
• Prepares records and reports on plant operations (10%)
• Performs minor electrical repairs (5%)
• Serves on the Utilities Maintenance emergency on-call rotation (5%)

Facilities Plant Mechanic II:

• Dismantles, and repairs varied plant equipment such as gauges, grit collectors, conveyors, mechanical grinders, engines, blowers, gas and air compressors, and chlorinators (25%)
• Performs complete overhauls of water and wastewater treatment machinery and equipment, including, chemical feeders, conveyors, chlorinators and pumps of all types (20%)
• Cleans, services and lubricates pumps, motors and related treatment equipment (5%)
• Replaces control valves and valve position indicating lights (10%)
• Maintains and installs liquid chemical feed pumps (10%)
• Makes minor and emergency repairs (10%)
• Prepares, records and reports on plant operations (10%)
• Performs minor electrical repairs (5%)
• Serves on the Utilities Maintenance emergency on-call rotation (5%)

Facilities Plant Mechanic III:

• Discusses job requirements with and receives instructions from supervisor (5%)
• Makes and adjusts work assignments (5%)
• Performs or assists in performing more difficult tasks (30%)
• Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions (20%)
• Trains and instructs unskilled semi-skilled workers (15%)
• Requisitions necessary equipment and materials (10%)
• Maintains time and material records (5%)
• Prepares sample work reports (5%)
• Serves on the Utilities Maintenance emergency on-call rotation (5%)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Facilities Plant Mechanic I:

General knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions.

Facilities Plant Mechanic II:

Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; welding and fabrication skills; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions.

Facilities Plant Mechanic III:

Thorough knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater treatment and pump station equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; welding and fabrication skills; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping and treatment equipment and to take proper remedial action; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions; thorough knowledge of the maintenance, repair and construction practice in the area assigned; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to assign and supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers; ability to prepare reports; ability to establish effective working relationships with others.

Education/Experience/Physical Demands/Special Requirements/Additional Information:

Facilities Plant Mechanic I Education/Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent and moderate experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Facilities Plant Mechanic II, III Graduation from high school or equivalent and moderate experience in water and/or wastewater utility systems maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Visual Acuity Requirements:

• Operate machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

Conditions the worker will be subject to in this position:

• Inside environmental conditions; Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
• Outside environmental conditions: No effective protection from weather.
• Both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
• Extreme cold: Temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
• Extreme heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
• Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
• Vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
• Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
• Atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
• Oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
• Respirator: The worker is required to wear a respirator.
• Confined spaces: The worker frequently is in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small-enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
• Narrow aisles: The worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.

Special Requirements/Additional Information:
