Police Officer

Under general supervision serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer responsible for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors and all University owned and operated property.

Essential duties include monitoring campus buildings, campus parking lots and garages for criminal activity, maintaining readiness for emergency and routine calls for service, educating the campus community on emergency and safety prevention techniques, enforcing all Federal, Local and State laws, daily and periodic patrols of various areas by foot, bicycle, electric powered golf carts or patrol vehicles to preserve the peace, enforce laws, prevent and detect crime, respond to all complaints and complete police reports. Provides the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency. Enforces state laws and file proper charges and documents with the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Respond to dispatch calls regarding service, accidents, disturbances, crime, distress, or illness and provides information, assistance, and service to students, staff, and the public. Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, causes and results of accidents and completes required reports. Collects and preserves physical evidence, protects crime scene, and reports and records all facts of incident. Work campus events, special events, university sponsored events. Mediates and resolves conflicts involving students, department personnel and community members. Provides escort service as needed and assists state, county and city law enforcement authorities as requested. Conducts crime prevention programs and presentations for faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community. Testifies at administrative hearings and in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations and actions of individuals for a case. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring range is $26.46 - $33.74. Education required is a high school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent specialized or technical training. Required licensing/certification includes being licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement enrolled BPOC, valid Texas Driver's License, Basic Peace Officer's Certification, medical examination, psychological examination, successful firearms qualifications, successful completion of the Field Training Program (FTO), auto insurance, no criminal charges, shift work varies, and able to obtain security clearance.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices, federal, state, local, and county laws, safety guidelines, Microsoft Office Professional or job-related applications, skill in leading projects, problem-solving and decision-making, analyzing documents, multitasking capabilities, strong time management, both verbal and written communication, ability to analyze and interpret data, prepare detailed reports, work independently, and communicate effectively.

No prior work experience is required but preferred. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.

Working/environmental conditions include reach and grasp objects, run, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl, use of video display terminal, use of manual dexterity and fine motor skill, communicate information orally and in writing, receive and understand information through oral and written communication, proofread and check documents for accuracy, work a fluctuating work schedule, and work involves strenuous physical activities of various kinds with continuous exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, unpleasant work conditions such as adverse weather conditions or extreme risk of accident or ill health.
