SY: Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) (POOL)

Title: Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) Work Unit: Exceptional Student Services Department/ Assigned School Site(s) Reports To: Exceptional Student Services Department Director(s) Contract Length: 9 month Pay Schedule: Ancillary
Overtime Status: Exempt Hours: 7 hours per day Union Status: NEA Licensure: NMPED Speech Language Pathologist Note: All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a post-offer/pre-employment background check. Some positions have additional requirements as established by federal or state rules and regulations.
General Function:
To work in collaboration with other school staff in the prevention or rehabilitation of communication disorders that interfere with students' ability to derive full benefit from the District's educational program.
Education/Training/Experience
(Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.) Required: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders. Completed the necessary clinical practicum as part of the Master's degree. Possesses (or is qualified to possess) a valid New Mexico Speech Pathology license from the Speech-Language/Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensing Board. The license must be renewed annually. New graduates must pass a national exam in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders within one year, be supervised for no less than nine months full-time, and complete a clinical fellowship within a period of 36 consecutive months. Must comply with the SLP/Audiology Hearing Aid Dispensing Board's rules and regulations regarding requirements as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish/English. Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
Ability to exercise effective communication and interpersonal skills with diverse populations, both in-person, on the telephone, and on the computer (email, etc.). Must be flexible and have excellent organizational skills. Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively use technology to compile and present data, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from community groups, staff, and the public.
Essential Job Functions
Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Tier 2 License: $65,000+
Tier 3 License: $75,000+

Typical office equipment, including: computer, keyboard, software platforms such as Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.
Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Works with a wide diversity of students with various issues, some of which may be behavioral in nature. Minimal lifting. A student at immediate risk of harm to self or others may require physical restraint by an employee with Crisis Intervention/Prevention training. Regularly required to stand; move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work and travel may be required.
Environmental Conditions:
The noise level is usually moderate. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Occasionally required to travel to other facilities within the District.

- Cooperates in the development and implementation of the District program of instruction, as applicable to communication disorders.
- Assists and guides teachers and other staff members in preventing and/or observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech, language, and hearing impairments.
- Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics related to communication disorders.
- Provides education on speech-language development, disorders, and delays to school staff.
- Develops case management programs that reflect individual needs, interests, and abilities that meet the requirements of student Individual Educational Program goals.
- Creates recommendations for educational staff that will assist students in overcoming communication difficulties.
- Establishes and maintains standards of appropriate student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Provides speech-language assessments, evaluates student progress regularly, and provides reports.
- Participates in Individual Educational Program meetings.
- Assists in making appropriate referrals to agencies and specialists.
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with parents concerning their student's program.
- Creates an environment conducive to learning appropriate to the age, maturity, and abilities of the students.
- Provides therapy and instruction to individuals and groups at the times and locations designated.
- Provides additional duties as assigned.
Tier 2 License: $65,000+

- Protects the district's resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
- Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
