ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

Location: Olympia, WA

• Total Beds: 107
• Combined ICU/PCU Unit
• ICU Beds: 10
• PCU Beds: 22

Unit Information

The ICU nurses are responsible for providing care to both ICU and PCU patients, with travelers expected to manage a majority of their contract while caring for PCU level patients. Floating to other departments occurs, including MedSurg and ER, and occasionally to Mother Baby for post-GYN surgical patients.

• CVICU procedures, including post-cath (TR Bands Radial and Femoral)

Note: Open heart surgeries and neuro interventions are not performed on the unit. Travelers will not be expected to care for balloon pumps or hypothermia protocols unless comfortable.

COVID & PPE

Patients in the ICU, PCU, and MedSurge units may include COVID-19 cases, with ratios of 1:3 for PCU or Med/Surg. Staff may be assigned COVID patients in Med/Surg as needed.

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS

Skills Required

• Strong peripheral IV skills
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Invasive line management (CVP, A-lines)
• IV medication titration
• Ventilator, tracheostomy, and high-flow BiPAP management

Support on the Unit

• CNA ratio: 1:12
• Charge nurse: Will take a partial patient assignment based on staffing
• Phlebotomy for peripheral draws
• Respiratory Therapists and Intensivists are in-house 24/7
• Centralized monitoring with telemetry tech available 24/7

Charting System/Equipment

• EMR: EPIC (preferred)
• IV Pumps: ICU Medical Plum Duo and Plum Single
• Med Dispensing: Pyxis
• Monitoring Equipment: Philips monitors

Floating

Travelers will float in accordance with the rest of the unit, which includes MedSurg assignments. Ratios in MedSurg are 1:5-6. Assignments in the PCU do not count as floating.

Orientation

• 4 hours of orientation with the clinical educator (includes badge, login information, unit tour, policies/procedures)
• 3 shifts on the unit
• Traveler telemetry competency exam is required before starting

Scheduling

Self-scheduling with manager oversight, including 2 weekends per month. Schedules provided 6 weeks in advance. Shifts are 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. Time off requests for up to 7 days are acceptable, and candidates should make schedule adjustments if unable to maintain 36 hours of work due to time off. Holiday expectations include 1-2 holidays per season.
