Structural Engineer (Structural Steel / Design-Assist)

Position Summary

\n

\n

The Sales Structural Engineer is a hybrid technical and commercial role responsible for

\n

supporting business development, preconstruction, and pursuit activities for structural steel

\n

projects. This role applies structural steel engineering knowledge to develop competitive,

\n

buildable, and low-risk solutions during the pursuit phase, translating project requirements into

\n

clearly defined scope, pricing strategy, and execution approach.

\n

The Sales Structural Engineer works closely with estimating, preconstruction, project

\n

management, fabrication, and erection teams, and serves as the technical face of the company

\n

during client engagements, design-assist efforts, and negotiated work.

\n

This position is not a post-award design or detailing role; it is a front-end, revenue-supporting

\n

role focused on winning work and shaping projects for successful execution.

\n

\n

Key Responsibilities

\n

\n

Preconstruction & Pursuit Support

\n

\n
• Review bid documents including structural drawings, specifications, and contract
\n

\n

requirements

\n

\n
• Identify scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and risk items specific to structural steel
\n

\n

fabrication and erection

\n

\n
• Support estimating with technical input including:
\n

\n

Tonnage assumptions

\n

\n
1. Connection design approach
\n
2. Temporary works assumptions (bracing, shoring, erection aids)
\n
3. Crane access, sequencing, and logistics concepts
\n

\n

\n
• Assist in development of pricing strategy by identifying cost and risk drivers
\n
• Participate in go/no-go evaluations and pursuit planning
\n

\n

\n

Technical Sales & Client Engagement

\n

\n

\n
• Serve as the technical representative in meetings with owners, general contractors,
\n

\n

architects, and engineers of record.

\n

\n
• Present and defend proposed structural steel solutions, means and methods, and value
\n

\n

engineering concepts.

\n

\n
• Support negotiated work, design-assist, and design-build pursuits.
\n
• Translate client goals into constructible and cost-effective steel solutions
\n
• Build long-term client relationships through technical credibility and responsiveness
\n

\n

Design-Assist & Early Engineering

\n

\n
• Participate in early-stage coordination with design teams to influence structural systems,
\n

\n

connection strategies, and sequencing

\n

\n
• Support development of delegated design scopes where applicable
\n
• Collaborate with internal engineering and detailing teams to ensure alignment between
\n

\n

pursuit assumptions and execution capabilities

\n

Internal Coordination & Handoff

\n

\n
• Coordinate closely with estimating, fabrication, erection, and project management teams
\n
• Clearly document assumptions, exclusions, and scope definitions for turnover to project
\n

\n

execution teams

• Support smooth transition from preconstruction to awarded project
\n

Qualifications

\n

\n

Required

\n

\n
• Must hold an active PE license.
\n
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field.
\n
• Strong working knowledge of structural steel systems, fabrication, and erection.
\n
• Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
\n
• Experience with steel means and methods, including erection sequencing and temporary
\n
• works concepts.
\n
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical audiences.
\n

\n

\n

Must Have:

\n

Professional Engineer (PE) license (Structural Steel) is a MUST.

\n

Prior experience with:

\n

\n
• Structural steel fabricator or erector
\n
• Design-assist or design-build projects
\n
• Preconstruction or estimating support
\n
• Experience interfacing directly with owners, GCs, and engineers during pursuits
\n

\n

\n
