Compensation Range & Starting Salary: Pay Range: $$57,803.20 - $90,084.80. Starting salary may be negotiable based on qualifications. Starting pay will be the minimum of the pay grade unless a candidate has qualifying full-time equivalent experience. Full-time equivalent experience is employment in a licensed EMS agency at the AEMT level. Also, every full year of active VBEMS volunteer experience will be counted as one-quarter of a year; four years VBEMS volunteer experience counts as one full year of full-time equivalent. Candidates with clearly defined full-time equivalent experience on their application may be placed in higher steps as follows:

• 0-1yr full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y22 / Step 1: $57,803.20
• 1-2yr full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y22 / Step 2: $ 59,529.60
• >2yrs+ full-time equivalent experience = Grade Y22 / Step 3: $61,734.40

NOTE: A $6,000 hiring bonus is being offered for this position set up in installments and subject to a repayment agreement. The first installment of $3,000 will be paid after successful completion of the Academy and release as an Attendant in Charge, second installment of $3,000 will be paid after a year of service as a released Attendant in Charge, if performance is rated as "Meets Expectations" or higher.

As an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (A-EMT) with the Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) you will:

• Assumes responsibility for the provision of appropriate basic and advanced life support emergency medical and rescue activities up to the to the level of A-EMT, until relieved by a higher certified provider.
• Provide care for patients in the pre-hospital environment including utilization of medications, IV therapy, and other associated tasks authorized at the A-EMT level; perform as a team member of an ambulance crew in situations involving both basic and advanced life support activities.
• Determine transport destination to the most appropriate medical facility for sick and injured patients and communicate patient turn-over completely and effectively with healthcare facility medical team.
• Safely operate emergency ambulance and other light duty emergency response vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes.
• Follow all emergency medical services regulations and applicable protocols.
• Complete reports and documentation accurately, efficiently, and within required timelines including patient care reports, and equipment and apparatus checkoffs.
• Attend classes and successfully perform those activities required to familiarize and maintain currency with the proper practices and procedures of emergency medical services to affect an efficient delivery of services.
• Effectively communicate and interact positively with coworkers, volunteers, patients, bystanders, citizens, and other public safety agency personnel.
• Exercise leadership, motivation, and mentorship to volunteer EMTs in the provision of medical assessment and care; work seamlessly with career and volunteer personnel to incorporate department and City vision and goals for quality service.

Minimum Requirements :

Minimum Qualifications: Must be 18 years old at the time of employment. Current Commonwealth of Virginia Certification and/or National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification or higher. Current CPR certification. Must be and remain eligible to function as an Emergency Medical Vehicle Operator in accordance with Virginia Department of Health - EMS Regulations and City/Departmental policies. Must refrain from using all tobacco products on and off the job. Must have a current and valid driver's license. Special Requirements: Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must successfully complete the Virginia Beach EMS Academy and field training program. Failure to successfully complete the Virginia Beach EMS Medic Academy will be grounds for employment termination. Must pass the ALS sanctioning examination, if not already sanctioned, within two (2) calendar months and be released to general supervision as an Advanced EMT within four (4) calendar months from date of hire. Failure to pass the sanctioning examination or be released to general supervision within established timeframes will be grounds for employment termination. Incumbents can expect to be assigned to and work at different stations and from different apparatuses. Must maintain current CPR certification. Must be and remain eligible to function as a Field Training Officer (FTO). This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, respirators, steel-toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. Successful completion of pre-employment physical. Must complete annual physical examinations and be classified as fit for employment by the Occupational Health Office.
