Summary of Responsibilities

The Global Institutional Business (GIB) Summer Analyst will join BBVA’s Corporate & Investment Banking division as a member of the Global Institutional Business Client Coverage team. The internship is designed to provide high-performing students with hands-on exposure to institutional client coverage, financial and credit analysis, financial markets and transaction execution within a global financial institution.

Summer Analysts will work alongside Junior Bankers (Analysts and Associates) and Senior Bankers (Vice Presidents, Executive Directors and Managing Directors) across different clients, sectors and assignments, gaining exposure to the full range of activities performed by a Global Banker.

The GIB Client Coverage team covers five institutional sectors: Banks, Insurance, Wealth & Asset Management (including Asset Managers, Hedge Funds and Pension Funds), Public Sector, and Financial Sponsors. The program is designed to provide broad-based experience across these sectors and exposure to different institutional business models, financial profiles and banking needs.

Summer Analysts will support client and sector analysis, preparation of client materials, financial and credit analysis, market-related analysis, transaction workstreams and internal processes, while interacting with Product, Risk and other teams across BBVA’s international network.

The internship is intended for students entering their final year of undergraduate studies. High-performing Summer Analysts may be considered for a full-time Analyst position following graduation.

Major/Essential Job Duties

Client Coverage and Deal Execution

● Support Junior and Senior Bankers in preparing for client meetings, including client and sector research, presentations, background materials and briefing notes.

● Assist with the preparation of pitch materials and analysis supporting potential financing, capital markets, transaction banking and other product opportunities.

● Support live transaction and client-related workstreams, including preparation and coordination of materials, documentation and follow-up items.

● Conduct research on existing and prospective clients to support relationship development and identification of potential business opportunities.

Financial, Credit, Market and Sector Analysis

● Analyze client financial performance, business models and relevant financial and credit metrics under the guidance of more experienced bankers.

● Support financial and credit analysis tailored to the characteristics of different institutional client segments, including Banks, Insurance, Wealth & Asset Management, Public Sector and Financial Sponsors.

● Conduct client, sector and market research using financial statements, public filings, market data and internal resources.

● Develop an understanding of the financial and market drivers relevant to different institutional clients, including capital, liquidity and funding considerations, investment and fundraising activity, portfolio developments and broader market conditions.

● Monitor relevant financial markets and sector developments and assess their potential implications for clients and business opportunities.

● Assist in the preparation of credit submissions and materials for internal credit and transaction approval processes.

● Support quantitative analysis, financial modelling and transaction analysis where relevant to the client or assignment.

Client and Product Coordination

● Develop an understanding of clients’ business models, strategic priorities, financial profiles and existing relationships with BBVA.

● Support coordination with Product teams to identify potential banking solutions and business opportunities aligned with client needs.

● Work with Risk and other internal stakeholders to gather information and support credit and transaction processes.

● Gain exposure to how Global Bankers connect client strategy, financial analysis, market developments and BBVA’s product capabilities to identify actionable business opportunities.

Internal Coordination and Teamwork

● Work collaboratively with Junior and Senior Bankers across different client assignments and institutional sectors.

● Coordinate with Product teams, Risk and other internal stakeholders to gather information and support client deliverables and transaction execution.

● Participate in internal discussions and meetings to develop an understanding of how client opportunities are evaluated and executed across the bank.

● Actively seek guidance and feedback and incorporate it into subsequent work.

Information Management and Reporting

● Support the maintenance of client, pipeline and profitability information in internal systems.

● Assist with client, sector and market monitoring relevant to the relationships being covered.

● Support account planning and other internal client and business reporting activities.

● Ensure that information used in analysis and client materials is accurate, appropriately sourced and consistently presented.

Level of Complexity and Development

● The Summer Analyst role is designed as an intensive learning experience combining technical development, exposure to client coverage, financial markets and participation in real assignments.

● Summer Analysts are not expected to arrive with the knowledge of a full-time Analyst. However, they are expected to demonstrate strong analytical ability, intellectual curiosity, attention to detail and the capacity to learn quickly.

● As the internship progresses, Summer Analysts will be expected to take increasing ownership of assigned tasks, anticipate next steps and contribute more independently to team deliverables.

● The internship provides exposure across sectors and assignments with the objective of developing broad and transferable banking skills before progressively developing deeper sector expertise as bankers advance in their careers.

Scope of Duties

Summer Analysts will operate as part of the Global Institutional Business junior banker team and will have the opportunity to work with different Junior and Senior Bankers throughout the internship.

The program is designed to provide broad exposure across Banks, Insurance, Wealth & Asset Management, Public Sector and Financial Sponsors, allowing interns to experience different clients, business models, types of assignments and working styles.

Summer Analysts are expected to approach all assignments with the same level of commitment and professionalism, whether supporting day-to-day client coverage, financial and credit analysis, market analysis, a live transaction, an internal process or a one-off pitch.

The objective of the internship is to build a strong foundation across the technical, analytical, commercial and professional capabilities required of a Global Banker. At the junior level, the priority is to develop broad and transferable capabilities across sectors. As bankers progress in seniority, they are expected to develop deeper sector knowledge and increasingly specialize, with sector specialization becoming established at the Vice President level.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities/Competencies

Technical Skills

● Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, with expected graduation in 2028.

● Strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in finance, economics, accounting, business or related fields.

● Foundational understanding of accounting, financial statements, corporate finance, credit fundamentals and financial markets.

● Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with an interest in developing financial, credit and market analysis capabilities.

● Interest in understanding different institutional business models and the financial and market drivers affecting Banks, Insurance companies, Asset Managers, Hedge Funds, Pension Funds, Public Sector entities and Financial Sponsors.

● Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint, with willingness and ability to learn additional financial, market-data and AI-enabled tools.

● Strong interest in financial markets, client strategy and the broader economic environment.

● Fluency in English required;
Spanish and other languages are a plus.

Team Structure and Development

Summer Analysts will work across different Junior Bankers, Senior Bankers, clients, sectors and assignments throughout the internship, providing broad exposure to the Global Institutional Business platform.

The program is intentionally designed to provide broad exposure at an early stage of the banker’s career. Interns will be encouraged to learn from different team members, ask questions, understand the broader purpose behind their assignments and remain engaged in the outcome of the work they support.

Through exposure to Banks, Insurance, Wealth & Asset Management, Public Sector and Financial Sponsors, Summer Analysts will begin developing an understanding of how client business models, financial and credit considerations, market dynamics and relevant banking opportunities differ across institutional sectors.

As bankers progress in their careers, this broad foundation is expected to evolve into deeper sector expertise and increasing specialization, with the objective of developing strong client and industry knowledge within a specific institutional sector by the Vice President level.

The internship is also an opportunity for BBVA and the Summer Analyst to assess long-term fit. Strong performance across technical skills, execution, judgement, collaboration, communication and overall contribution to the team may lead to consideration for a full-time Analyst position following graduation.

With respect to this position in our New York Office, the expected hourly rate is $35/hour. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
