Job Summary: As an Athletic coach or instructor, your primary job will be to provide expert training for athletes. You'll be assisting their skills development and ensuring peak performance and fitness are achieved during crucial times, such as competitions, tournaments, matches, trials, and qualifying events. To accomplish their primary goals of guiding a successful sports team and overseeing an effective sports program, an Athletic Coach must be committed to the development of each player on the roster and must also help students develop a competitive nature, teach them about ethical behavior and good sportsmanship, and assist in the development of leadership skills.
Essential Job Functions
1. Help your athletes to develop new skills and prepare mentally for competitions
2. Understand aspects of health, exercise science, and physical education. Developing tactics and training activities, preparing and conditioning athletes
3. Evaluate and assess strengths and weaknesses in a participant's performance and identifying areas for further development by providing suitable feedback, balancing criticism with positivity and motivation.
4. Coordinate with other partners in performance management, such as physiotherapists, doctors, and nutritionists.
5. Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the people you work with. Work to a high legal and ethical standard at all times, particularly in relation to issues such as child safeguarding and health and safety requirements
6. Provide appropriate mentoring, support, and guidance to other coaches, players, and student volunteers
7. Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program.
8. Maintain good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
9. Complete and submit proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries to athletic office within 24 hours.
10. Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Duties & Responsibilities

1. Encourage participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge, and techniques
2. Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorize who may enter, issue or requisition equipment
3. Complete continuous professional development and attend relevant training courses to improve coaching delivery.
4. Adhere to the ethical and legal obligations to their perspective sports league and/or competition
5. Ensure that participants train and perform to a high standard of health and safety at all times
6. Coordinate participants' attendance at meetings and/or other sports events. Provide documentation to fulfill state and UCPS requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
7. Delegate specific duty, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
8. Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
9. Mentor student off- as well as on-field, encouraging leadership skills and academic success. Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
10. Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
11. Account for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment. Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records.
12. Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. To coordinate the delivery of an innovative sports program to attract new participants of all levels and create pathways for continued participation.
13. Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times. Coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
14. Other related duties as assigned

- Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the sport.
- A strong interest in maintaining professional skills and knowledge.
- A desire to help others succeed.
- 2 years or more sports coaching experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, ideally in a range of environments including schools/clubs/community/third level settings.
- CPR training in a paid or voluntary capacity, ideally in a range of environments including schools/clubs/community/third level settings.
- A minimum of 1 year's sports coaching experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, ideally in a range of environments including schools/clubs/community/third level settings; Certification as a teacher by the Department of Public Instructions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Reports To: Athletic Director and Principal
Job Knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policy approved by the Union County Public School System Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the sports program.
- Knowledge of existing system, state, and conference regulations; implement them consistently and interprets them for staff. Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.

Problem Solving
- Responsible for assessing the performance of the athletes under your expert direction, and analyzing the flaws or weaknesses of their forthcoming opponents. You'll then be in charge of developing tactics and training activities.
Communication/Interactions
- Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results communicate instructions and commands using clear, simple language
Customer Relationships
- Manage fundraising and promotional efforts

Physical Requirements
Work Environment:
Understand aspects of health, exercise science, and physical education.
Prepared to work in bad weather and be willing to travel with the team to different locations for games. They also run the risk of injury due to being on the sidelines during sports games.
Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision to read printed materials, a VDT screen, or other monitoring devices.
Environmental Conditions: Varies from classrooms to exposure to outside weather conditions with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise intensity levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.
