SUMMARY
Plans, promotes and implements programs for the library to include all ages.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates programming for all ages. Creates, plans, and implements programming opportunities, which mesh with the library’s goal and mission.
- Works with staff and volunteers to provide joint programming, coordinate with themes, and assist each other in outreach and programming efforts. Recruit volunteers for programming as needed.
- Designs, writes, edits and coordinates the development of press releases and promotional materials appropriate to program activities in conjunction with the Library Cataloguer/Marketing.
- Increases library awareness by using programming to motivate patrons to visit and utilize library services.
- Creates bulletin boards, decorative displays and special book displays focused on the children’s library user.
- Assists in construction of bulletin boards, decorative displays and special book displays throughout the library, which will promote programming.
- Performs public speaking engagements regarding library services and programs.
- Gives tours of the library that may involve some programming. This would be in conjunction with groups outside of the library who want to know about the library, which may include the public school, alternative schools, preschools, etc.
- Assists with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate to the objectives and funding nature of the program and prepares related reports.
- Keeps an accounting record of donations, both monetary and material, as related to programming.
- Develops the collection in the children’s room in collaboration with the library manager through assisting the Library Manager with items to order for circulation, items to weed, and forwarding items that need to be repaired to the library clerk.
- Purchases program supplies making sure the budget is maintained.
- Collects data to prepare reports; maintains program/project records and statistical information. Evaluates outcomes.
- Communicates with those who have done programming with the use of thank you notes or other communications.
- Attends educational meetings and workshops to stay abreast of the newest materials, program ideas and trends.
- Maintains the children’s room and story hour room (including shelving items).
- Assists patrons with reference and information needs in the children’s room.
- Assists patrons with the use of e-mail, Internet, AWE computers, and Microsoft Office in the children’s room.
- Assists in the training of work-study students and volunteers assigned to the children’s area.
- Performs additional duties as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Upon direction, may supervise work-study students and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Teaching certificate preferred.
Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system. Ability to be organized. Ability to work as a team member, or independently, as needed. Basic knowledge of reader interest levels. Ability to use current technology. Ability to perform basic accounting functions. Ability to display sound judgment and self-control at all times.
Experience with multi-line telephone system; copy machine; fax machine; key calculator, library automation system; graphic computer programs; Microsoft Office.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Effective verbal and written skills and telephone etiquette. Ability to provide information and respond to questions from clients, customers and the public. Spanish language skills preferred but not required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages. May need to figure amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, and proportions if helping a patron.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and problems brought forth by patrons. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (if required)
Teaching certificate preferred.
