Patient Transporter

Under the general guidance of the Patient Support Services Supervisor, Patient Transporter will provide safe and timely transports for patients and visitors. Patient Transporters can walk anywhere from 30-40,000 steps in a shift which is the equivalent of 15-20 miles a day. Position Responsibilities include transferring from bed to gurney or chair, supports Radiology, CT, MRI, and Perioperative Services with all patients, while promoting safe patient handling. This position will also provide a comprehensive orientation and training program for new Patient Transport Assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:

• American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
• High School Diploma, GED equivalent or related experience/training
• Two (2) years of Customer Service experience
• Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability and skill to safely operate wheelchairs, gurneys, electric beds, cribs, and specialty beds
• Knowledge of proper body mechanics and patient transfer techniques, and skill to transport patients without injury to self, patient, or others
• Knowledge of and ability to follow appropriate infection control techniques to safeguard other patients and visitors from infected patients
• Basic knowledge of CPR, 02, IV's/pumps, feeding tubes/pumps, foley bags, and chest tubes
• Ability to recognize problems with life support equipment or a sudden change in a patient's condition, and to report it to a licensed care provider
• Ability to maintain composure, respond calmly, and use sound judgment should a medical emergency occur during a patient transport
• Ability to deal effectively and kindly with patients who may be confused, upset, incoherent, and/or aggressive
• Interpersonal skills to deal in a tactful, courteous, pleasant, and professional manner with patients, visitors, and other hospital staff, which includes individuals with various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
• Ability and skill to answer a multi-line telephone courteously, often handling several incoming calls simultaneously, and quickly, accurately, and legibly record service requests
• Ability to instruct student trainees, volunteers, and new employees in patient transfer techniques and other patient transport duties

Preferred Qualifications:

• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
• One (1) year of paid Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or Hospital experience

Department Overview:

Patient Support Services Department consists of Lift Team, Mental Health Workers & Special Duty Caregivers, Patient Transport and Safe Patient Handling. The Patient Transport Services department provides coordinated, centrally dispatched transportation services for patients being treated in the outpatient clinics and the inpatient units and diagnostic areas. The unit also provides information, reception, and assistance to patients, visitors, hospital staff, and the public.
