The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs a variety of standardized and highly specialized Biochemical, Hematological, Microbiological and Blood Banking analysis in the Clinical Laboratory. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results used for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients. Responsibilities Perform manual, semi‑automated, and automated Biochemical, Hematological, Microbiological, and Blood Bank analyses on varied patient specimens, maintaining a high degree of accuracy, reliability and productivity. Recognize normal, abnormal, unusual and critical results and take appropriate action as established by laboratory policy, including consideration of patient age. Demonstrate proficiency in clerical and computer functions for communicating results and carrying out additional clinical and clerical duties to meet departmental needs. Ensure results are available within defined turnaround time (TAT) guidelines. Communicate and interact effectively with co‑workers, guests of the institution and hospital clinical staff. Maintain professional growth and development through continuing education and training. Participate in the department’s Quality Assurance Program and continuing education sessions. Monitor supply levels, assist in inventory management, and communicate supply needs to the supervisor. Assist in training personnel as assigned. Work independently, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and covering for the lab in emergencies or staffing shortages. Obtain specimens from designated patients as required. Adhere to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Possess theoretical and practical knowledge of all procedures and instrumentation in assigned areas. Understand the clinical significance of each test performed. Identify and correct problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results. Adhere to, perform and document all calibration, maintenance and quality control activities according to laboratory policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Specialized/technical training: Training for California Clinical Laboratory Scientist or California Specialty (Limited) License. At least 1 year of prior experience and/or CLS training, including specialized and complex analysis, quality control, calibration, QC evaluation, inventory control, preventative maintenance, and quality improvement related to clinical laboratory work. Strong organizational and time‑management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Well‑developed planning, marketing, organizational development, and business skills. Ability to work with physicians, staff, and professionals in multiple settings, supporting workplace diversity. Sensitivity to and understanding of academic disciplines and issues. Knowledge of GMP (good manufacturing practice) in accordance with FDA, AABB, and state requirements. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications. Preferred Qualifications At least 1 year of point‑of‑care experience. Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Microbiology (ASCP). Required Licenses and Certifications Clinical Laboratory Scientist – CLS or Limited license from the State of California. Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City); must obtain a card within 30 days of hire if not already in possession and maintain renewal before expiration. Compensation The hourly rate range for this position is $46.00 – $76.07.
