Job Summary Site: Newton‑Wellesley Hospital, Mass General Brigham. 24‑hour night shifts (11:15 p‑7:15 a), 3×8‑hr shifts, every other weekend and rotating holidays. Registered nurse renders highly professional and technical nursing care to assigned patients. The RN provides direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Oversees other assigned team members and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide population‑specific care in accordance with the BORN regulations and professional standards of care. Specialty Area Additional Requirements Adult GI: 2 years critical care/GI experience required unless otherwise noted; ACLS required within first year; CCGRN certification preferred. ARTC (Assisted Reproductive Technologies Clinic): Dual practice supporting BWH and MGH fertility practices. BSN required upon employment; ASRM RN certificate within first year; at least 1 year experience in reproductive endocrinology. Cancer Center: Minimum 1 year experience administering chemotherapy single agent and multi‑drug regimen in outpatient setting; oncology nursing certification (OCN) or obtained within first year; chemotherapy/biotherapy administration certification card required; oncology nursing society strongly preferred. Cardiovascular Center: 2 years critical care experience; cardiac ICU/CCU/ cardiac surgery or cath lab experience preferred; BLS/ACLS certification required. Device Clinic: 2 years device clinic experience with pacemaker programming and follow‑up; BCLS and ACLS certifications required; HRS/NASP certification preferred. ED: 2 years ED experience; ACLS, PALS, CPI certifications required within first year; CEN or CCRN preferred. ICU: 2 years critical care experience; ACLS required within first year. L&&D/AETU: 2 years labor & delivery experience; NRP required within first year. Maternal Fetal Medicine: Perinatal procedures for high‑risk pregnant population; minimum 2 years perinatal services experience; BSN required; BLS required; ACLS preferred. Med/Surg: 1 year Med/Surg experience; telemetry training required within first year. Mother/Baby: 2 years Mother/Baby experience; NRP required within first year. OR: 2 years OR experience; Peri‑operative Nursing Program preferred; AORN certification preferred. PACU/Henderson: 2 years critical care/PACU experience; ACLS, PALS required within first year; CPAN/CAPA preferred. Pediatrics: 2 years Pediatrics experience; NRP required within first year if cross‑trained. Pedi GI: 2 years Pediatric GI experience; PALS required. Psychiatry: 2 years Psychiatry experience; CPI required within first month. SCN: 2 years SCN experience; NRP required within first year. STAT RN: 2 years critical care/emergency experience; ACLS, PALS, CPI required within first year. Primary Care Triage RN: 2 years triage, ER, urgent care, or outpatient experience; ANCC RN‑BC preferred. Essential Functions Adhere to general hospital standards and promote a cooperative work environment through communication and teamwork. Follow departmental policies and procedures. Contribute to the overall quality of services. Assume responsibility for keeping informed about changes. Make independent decisions within the scope of nursing practice. Use the nursing process and evidence‑based practice to ensure quality patient care throughout the episode of care. Assess patients’ physical, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and social needs. Provide competent and compassionate care specific to the unique needs of individual patients and populations served. Individualize care considering age, developmental or physical abilities, spiritual or cultural practices, economic status, literacy, communication, cognitive abilities, and sexual orientation. Update knowledge and skill of populations served to meet patient care needs. Apply knowledge of illness, injury, and disease in the assessment process and recognize symptoms that require immediate intervention. Individualize a plan of care based on assessments and in collaboration with the patient/family/surrounding resources and multidisciplinary team members. Engage patient/family/surrounding others as partners in caring. Update plan of care and nursing documentation based on continuing assessments. Implement clinical and technical aspects of care and physicians’ orders in compliance with standards of practice and standards of care. Evaluate patient/family responses to interventions and revise plan of care accordingly. Demonstrate the ability to set priorities when planning and delivering patient care. Coordinate and collaborate with appropriate resources and multidisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive discharge planning. Recognize changes in patient’s physical and mental status and inform physician or another health care professional. Collaborate with case managers to anticipate discharge needs and address barriers. Identify primary responsible caregiver at home and involve them in patient teaching and discharge planning. Create and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, and co‑workers. Use two patient identifiers to match the correct patient with the correct care, treatment, or services. Demonstrate infection control principles and universal precautions, OSHA standards, hazardous material guidelines, and isolation procedures. Safeguard the rights of patients and hospital personnel to privacy by protecting information confidentially. Provide patient comfort and hygiene. Demonstrate proper use of equipment and supplies according to established procedures. Assess the need prior to restraints and use alternative measures when appropriate. Demonstrate proper technique and calibration of equipment when performing point‑of‑care testing. Ensure equipment is operational and safe. Respond appropriately to emergency situations. Minimize injury risk by promoting fall precautions, using call bell, side rails, and other safety practices. Treat patients and family in a respectful manner. Take initiative to advocate for the patient. Make patients aware of rights and responsibilities. Provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patient and family. Ensure quality of nursing practice through performance improvement activities. Incorporate performance improvement recommendations into daily practice. Control patient care cost through efficient management of supplies and services. Suggest new approaches to cost containment. Participate in performance improvement activities by evaluating outcomes and making recommendations. Ensure complete, accurate, and timely written communication of patient information. Complete consistently all parts of the documentation system per hospital/unit policies. Ensure appropriate documentation on or in patient’s discharge instructions. Document patient progress or lack of progress in a chronologically accurate and organized format. Provide safe, accurate, and timely medication and IV administration. Use the “5 rights” when administering medication to patients. Scan patient, medication, and self barcodes where applicable. Demonstrate knowledge of drug action and appropriate nursing interventions for adverse reactions. Verify or rectify patient medication record per unit protocols. Demonstrate critical assessment of correct drug, appropriate dose, and pump settings when caring for patients with continuous large‑volume infusion, PCA, or epidural. Demonstrate verbalizing appropriate recognition, reporting of medication variances and problems with the medication process. Verify and analyze appropriateness of medication/IV fluid orders. Ensure correct infusion rates when administering medications using the infusion pump. Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive educational plan. Assess the need for patient/family education. Formulate and implement an educational plan based on assessed needs. Document education in the patient record. Evaluate outcomes of education plan and modify instruction based on evaluation. Take personal responsibility for own performance and professional growth. Initiate and facilitate changes to improve quality of nursing care on the unit. Accept responsibility and accountability for care given to assigned patients. Work well with co‑workers and collaborate with other health‑care team members. Accept and learn from constructive criticism. Be self‑directed in maintaining clinical competence and mandatory training. Perform duties of charge nurse as needed competently. Act as a resource and professional role model for peers and students. Assist in orientation and ongoing support of new staff. Advocate for the patient by escalating concerns up the chain of command. Manage urgent and emergent situations effectively. Communicate effectively, promote a cooperative working environment, and address conflicts with sensitivity. Communicate expectations to assigned team members with clarity. Solve problems effectively. Ensure that critical patient information is communicated across the continuum of care. Support and promote management decisions, goals, and initiatives. Device Clinic RN Role Specific Responsibilities Enroll, interrogate, and program outpatient pacemaker patients. Recognize abnormalities, malfunctions, and end‑of‑service indicators; notify cardiologist and assist in scheduling follow‑up. Coordinate and prioritize with other team members to respond to, plan, and initiate timely care. Educate patients and families regarding device function and clinic follow‑up routine. Forward information to referring physicians. Ensure timely and proper documentation and billing. Lead device recall team. Handle administrative duties of all device tele‑monitoring, including purchase orders, billing issues, and reporting. Oversee Cardiac Arrhythmia Service event monitoring. Provide cross‑coverage as necessary. Serve as a resource to staff, other departments, and administration; provide input to develop and maintain budgetary goals. Maintain knowledge of hospital, department, and regulatory agency policies and requirements. Participate in continuing education. STAT RN Role Specific Responsibilities Assist with rapid responses and Code Blue on inpatient units. Assist with admissions/transfers of critically ill patients to ICU from ED, OR, PACU, medical/surgical, or labor & delivery units. Assist with care of unstable or critically ill, ICU‑level patients in the ED, PACU, and medical surgical units as needed. Assist with IV access and phlebotomy as needed. Assist in the transport and supervision of patients requiring diagnostic testing off a patient unit. Perform other clinical duties as assigned when no critical‑care support needs. Work under direct supervision of Nursing Administrator and overall direction of the ICU nurse manager. Qualifications Education: Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence and experience as required by the specialty area. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Use the nursing process and evidence‑based practice; create and maintain a safe therapeutic environment; ensure quality of practice through performance improvement; ensure complete and accurate written communication; provide safe medication and IV administration; coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team for education. Physical Environment: RN may be exposed to communicable diseases, hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes, and radiation; general cleaning may involve dirt, odors, cramped quarters; may work with angry or agitated patients.
