Construction Field Manager - Project Manager
FFI Framing
Job Description
Job Description
Position Summary
The Construction Field Manager is responsible for the day-to-day field management of assigned FFI Framing jobs and framing crews. This is a primarily field-based position with a strong, consistent job-site presence. The Construction Field Manager is expected to know the status of each assigned job, keep crews productive and moving, maintain quality and safety standards, and communicate directly with builder representatives, vendors, crews, and FFI Framing leadership.
This role directly manages independent subcontract framing crews and is accountable for their performance on assigned jobs. The Construction Field Manager may work hands-on at times for training, demonstration, troubleshooting, or correction.
The Construction Field Manager works closely with the Director of Construction on field execution, quality, technical issues, crew performance, and safety, and with the Manager of Operations on schedules, job information, plans, documents, and other operational needs.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Field Operations & Construction
- Maintain a strong daily presence on assigned jobsites and know the status, crew, progress, needs, and next steps for each job.
- Keep framing work moving quickly and efficiently while maintaining FFI Framing’s quality and safety standards.
- Review plans, specifications, scopes of work, schedules, and job requirements before and during construction and make sure crews understand what is expected.
- Monitor progress throughout the framing process, identify delays or obstacles early, and take action to keep jobs on schedule.
- Coordinate field needs such as materials, deliveries, cranes, corrections, access, and other items that can affect production; communicate needs promptly to the appropriate FFI Framing team member, builder or vendor.
- Notify the Director of Construction and Manager of Operations promptly when field conditions, crew availability, material issues, or other problems may affect the schedule or builder commitment.
- Keep the customer/builder regularly informed of schedule changes and delays.
Crew Management, Training & Accountability
- Directly manage assigned framing crews and set clear expectations for schedule, production, workmanship, safety, communication, cleanup, and completion.
- Make sure crews have the current plans, scope, information, and materials needed to perform their work and understand job-specific requirements before work proceeds.
- Monitor crew performance throughout the job and address slow production, poor workmanship, lack of manpower, communication problems, or failure to meet expectations promptly.
- Coach and educate crews on framing methods, plan requirements, quality standards, and corrective work. Demonstrate proper techniques hands-on when needed to teach or clarify expectations without becoming part of the regular production crew.
- Evaluate crew strengths, weaknesses, reliability, and technical ability and communicate performance concerns or crew-assignment recommendations to the Director of Construction and Manager of Operations.
Coordinate crew assignments with the Manager of Operations.
Quality & Technical Framing
- Inspect framing work continuously as it progresses with the goal of catching problems before they become rework, delays, builder complaints, or back charges.
- Verify that framing is built according to approved plans, structural details, specifications, scopes of work, and FFI Framing quality standards.
- Use strong framing knowledge to identify deficiencies, incorrect installation, plan conflicts, and field conditions and work with the crew and Director of Construction to determine the proper correction.
- Make sure deficiencies, punch items, callbacks, and corrective work are completed correctly and promptly, and verify corrections before considering the issue closed.
- Document significant quality problems, rework, field conditions, additional work, and circumstances that may result in a back charge, change, or dispute.
- Secure and document builder change order approval for extra work via text, email or builder system prior to work being conducted.
Builder & Vendor Communication
- Serve as the primary FFI field contact for builder superintendents and other builder field representatives on assigned jobs.
- Maintain professional, responsive working relationships with builders and communicate job status, field concerns, schedule issues, and corrective actions clearly and promptly.
- Respond to builder concerns quickly, verify the issue in the field, and work toward practical resolution while keeping the Director of Construction informed of significant matters.
- Communicate and coordinate with builders, material suppliers, crane companies, and other vendors as appropriate regarding shortages, incorrect deliveries, damaged materials, timing, or other issues affecting the job.
- Represent FFI Framing professionally on every jobsite and in all interactions with builders, crews, vendors, inspectors, and other project participants.
Safety
- Maintain active awareness of jobsite safety and hold framing crews accountable for following FFI Framing’s Safety Program, builder requirements, and applicable jobsite safety expectations.
- Identify unsafe conditions or work practices and require prompt correction before work continues when necessary.
- Communicate significant or recurring safety concerns to the Director of Construction and document incidents or conditions as required.
- Balance production expectations with safety at all times; schedule pressure is never a reason to allow unsafe work.
Job Documentation & Communication
- Keep required job status, progress, crew, quality, safety, and field information accurate and current in company systems and reports.
- Document delays, material shortages, plan conflicts, additional work, builder-directed changes, deficiencies, back-charge issues, and other significant field events promptly.
- Use company and builder systems, email, text, photos, and other required tools sufficiently to communicate field information and maintain required records.
- Stay in regular communication with the Director of Construction and Manager of Operations so field conditions, schedule needs, crew issues, and builder concerns are known and can be acted on quickly.
Measures of Performance
- Assigned framing jobs are started, progressed, and completed in accordance with committed schedules, with preventable delays minimized.
- Framing work achieves a high rate of first-pass acceptance, with deficiencies, punch items, callbacks, and rework kept to a minimum.
- Preventable back charges, rework costs, and uncompensated extra work are minimized, and required approvals for additional work are secured before work proceeds.
- Assigned crews consistently meet production, quality, safety, and communication expectations. Recurring performance problems are identified, addressed, and escalated when necessary.
- Conditions that may affect schedule, quality, cost, or builder commitments are identified early, communicated promptly, and driven to resolution.
- Builder representatives receive timely, accurate, and proactive communication regarding job status, schedule changes, deficiencies, and significant field issues.
- Job status, schedule changes, field issues, corrective work, additional work, and other required information are accurately documented in company or builder systems within established timeframes.
- Unsafe conditions and practices are addressed promptly, recurring violations are escalated, and required safety documentation and incident reporting are completed on time.
Experience & Qualifications
- 10+ years of residential construction experience with substantial hands-on knowledge of wood framing; prior framing crew leadership, superintendent, or construction management experience strongly preferred.
- Strong practical knowledge of residential wood framing, framing sequence, materials, structural components, connections, wall and floor systems, roof framing, blocking, bracing, hardware, and common framing defects.
- Ability to recognize problems, explain expectations, coach crews, and demonstrate proper framing methods when needed.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural plans, framing details, specifications, and scopes of work.
- Demonstrated ability to manage subcontract framing crews, maintain production schedules, enforce quality standards, and solve field problems.
- Ability and willingness to teach, coach, and physically demonstrate framing methods or corrections when needed without serving as a production framer.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally with builders, crews, vendors, and FFI leadership.
- Working ability to use a smartphone, email, photos, company and builder systems, and other basic technology required for field communication and documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple active jobs and priorities, make timely field decisions, and take ownership of assigned work.
- Bilingual Spanish-English strongly preferred to support effective communication with framing crews and subcontractors.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to spend most of the workday in the field and regularly walk active construction sites for extended periods.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend and navigate uneven terrain, equipment, materials in active work areas.
- Ability to occasionally perform hands-on framing demonstrations, training, or troubleshooting as needed.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials, tools, or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind, and travel regularly among assigned jobsites and communities.
