Clinical Pharmacist - Acute Care/Inpatient (Float)
For pharmacists who thrive on variety, clinical complexity, and being a trusted resource wherever patients need you most, this role offers a uniquely dynamic way to practice inpatient pharmacy at the highest level. A Career Defining Opportunity in Academic Acute Care Acute care pharmacy demands adaptability, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to make meaningful contributions across diverse patient populations. At UVA Health, Float Clinical Pharmacists are not "fill-ins." They are highly skilled clinicians who bring consistency, safety, and expertise to multiple inpatient practice areas within a nationally recognized academic medical center. This role is ideal for pharmacists who enjoy breadth of practice, continuous learning, and the professional satisfaction that comes from supporting teams and patients across the continuum of inpatient care.
The Role We are seeking a Float Clinical Pharmacist to provide clinical and operational support across multiple inpatient service lines, helping ensure safe, effective, and high-quality medication use for our patients. In this role, you will apply your broad acute care knowledge while developing deeper familiarity with a wide range of specialties and care environments. On a day-to-day basis, you will:
- Provide clinical pharmacy services across a variety of acute care and inpatient practice areas based on operational and patient care needs
- Review, verify, and manage medication orders with a strong emphasis on patient safety, evidence-based practice, and therapeutic optimization
- Serve as a clinical resource to physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other members of the care team
- Identify, prevent, and resolve medication-related problems for patients with complex and evolving clinical conditions
- Support transitions of care through medication reconciliation, monitoring, and patient-specific recommendations
- Contribute to operational excellence by maintaining continuity of pharmacy services across units and shifts
What an average day looks like: No two days are exactly the same. You may support a medical or surgical unit one day and transition to a different inpatient service the next, collaborating with new teams while applying consistent clinical standards. The pace is engaging and intellectually stimulating, offering exposure to a broad range of disease states, therapies, and patient needs. This variety allows float pharmacists to sharpen their clinical versatility while remaining deeply connected to direct patient care.
