Police Officer 2 - Lateral (Traffic)

Position Overview The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) seeks experienced Police Officers for lateral positions within the Traffic Division. Candidates must have two (2) or more years of continuous full‑time law enforcement experience and a certification as a law‑enforcement officer through a State Police Standards and Training Commission. The division includes the Aggressive/Impaired Driving Unit, the Motorcycle Officer Program, and the Crash Investigator Unit. The department operates 24/7 and officers must be available to work any day, shift or schedule as required. Responsibilities Aggressive/Impaired Driving Unit – Target distracted, impaired, and aggressive drivers; conduct DUI enforcement, use of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), and provide training in DUI and SFST Instructor Course, ARIDE, DRE School, and other specialized courses. Motorcycle Officer Unit – Address traffic violations, crashes, and neighborhood complaints; maintain a motorcycle endorsement on a valid Tennessee driver’s license and complete an 80‑hour Police Motorcycle Operator Course. Crash Investigator Unit – Investigate property damage and personal injury crashes, including hit‑and‑run, life‑threatening, and fatal crashes; attend investigative training such as At‑Scene Crash Investigation, Advanced Crash Investigation, and Traffic Crash Reconstruction, along with occupant safety and other specialized schools. Participate in a 24‑hour, rotational call‑out schedule and respond to shifts and days off as needed. Perform duties assigned by the Traffic Division Commander or designee. Complete MNPD’s Lateral Police Training Academy, followed by placement in a unit based on training completion and division needs. Qualifications At least two (2) years of uninterrupted full‑time, certified law‑enforcement experience. Certified through a State Police Standards and Training Commission (or equivalent). No more than three (3) years since last break in service. Valid Tennessee driver’s license; possession of a motorcycle endorsement for Motorcycle Officer applicants. U.S. citizenship or permanent legal resident status, or veteran status with requirement to obtain citizenship within six (6) years of hire. Minimum age of 21 years. Strong working knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, and rules of evidence as they relate to traffic investigations and enforcement. Successful completion of a medical and psychological examination, criminal‑history background check, CVSA, and drug test. Ability to communicate effectively and make sound decisions in high‑pressure situations. Self‑motivated, team‑player, and willing to work a flexible schedule. Salary Step 3 $77,472.00 to Step 15 $98,253.00 without education incentive. Step 3 $79,796.16 to Step 15 $101,200.59 with an Associate’s degree. Step 3 $82,120.32 to Step 15 $104,148.18 with a Bachelor’s degree. Education incentives available to qualified candidates. Excellent medical and dental insurance (BlueCross BlueShield PPO or Cigna Choice Fund). Shift differential pay for night or morning shifts. Department provides all necessary equipment and uniforms. Metro pays 75% of the medical premium, employees pay 25%. Life Insurance: $50,000 basic life, $50,000 AD&D; supplemental life and dependent life available. Dental Insurance: BlueCross BlueShield single coverage at no cost; family plans available. Optional vision insurance. Additional coverage available through payroll deductions.
