Overview Structural Engineer – Building Design | Hybrid As part of our structures growth across our footprint, we’re adding a structural engineer who would serve an important role in planning, analysis, design, and detailing of new building structures and existing building renovations, with a current focus on transportation-related buildings such as rail & transit stations and parking facilities. The ideal candidate should possess a “can‑do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast‑paced, and enjoyable environment. Learn more about our Structures practice at VHB: Bridges & Structures | VHB Responsibilities Develop, organize, and implement structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation-related building structures Support and mentor junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc. Provide technical oversight and review of structural designs Monitor project budgets and schedules Assist with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits Support building structural projects across VHB’s footprint Skills & Abilities Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in structural building engineering Must possess strong technical skills and knowledge of various building structural systems and codes Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills Demonstrates excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing Team oriented with strong ability to work independently Robust technical and critical thinking skills Strong project management skills Proactive and self‑motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of staff working remotely Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility Motivated to mentor junior staff Strong organizational and time‑management skills Proficiency with structural engineering 3D finite analysis and BIM software such as RISA3D, STAADPro, SAP2000, RAM Concept, RAM Structural System, MathCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and Microstation Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required, master’s degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience) Minimum 5‑8 years of structural engineering experience required Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundation Proficient in designing steel and concrete structures with a solid understanding of the International Code and local codes; familiarity with wood and heavy timber structures is a plus Experience working on station projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred Familiarity with Design‑Bid‑Build and Design‑Build project delivery Hiring Salary Range $100,000–$130,000.
