Job Title: Hardscape Foreman / Boulder Wall Builder
Job Description
This role leads the construction of high-quality boulder and retaining walls for both residential and commercial projects. You will run jobs, guide crews, and build durable outdoor structures that are both structurally sound and visually appealing. The position combines hands-on hardscape work with equipment operation and on-site leadership to deliver outdoor spaces that stand out and are built to last.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise hardscape crews on residential and commercial job sites, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
- Build and install retaining walls, garden walls, boulder walls, and other stone structures that are structurally sound and visually sharp.
- Operate mini excavators and other heavy equipment, including skid steers and front-end loaders, to support excavation and material handling.
- Prepare job sites through excavation, grading, and drainage planning to ensure stable foundations and long-lasting installations.
- Read and follow construction plans and layouts accurately, confirming measurements and elevations before and during installation.
- Keep job sites safe, clean, and organized by following safety procedures, managing tools and equipment, and maintaining clear work areas.
- Assist in the installation of natural stone and rock retaining walls, including setting base material, stacking stone, and backfilling.
- Perform excavation, grading, and base preparation to create proper subgrades and support structures for walls and hardscape features.
- Select, place, and stack stone with attention to structural integrity, fit, and appearance, following proper stone-setting techniques.
- Work closely with experienced crew members to ensure precision, quality craftsmanship, and consistent project outcomes.
- Contribute to broader landscape projects by assisting with related hardscape and landscape maintenance tasks as needed.
- Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for cutting, shaping, and installing stone and other materials.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in hardscape construction, specifically building boulder walls, retaining walls, and stone structures.
- Experience leading crews or running jobs on construction or landscape projects.
- Hands-on construction skills related to installation of hardscape and landscape features.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, and front-end loaders.
- Proficiency in reading and following construction plans, drawings, and layouts accurately.
- Strong understanding of excavation, grading, and drainage planning for retaining walls and similar structures.
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively in a construction environment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and handle minor lifting and physical labor.
- Commitment to maintaining safe, organized, and efficient job sites while working collaboratively with a crew.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
- Experience operating a variety of relevant equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and similar machinery.
- Experience in hardscape, landscape maintenance, or related construction trades.
- Attention to detail in stone selection, placement, and stacking to achieve both strength and aesthetic appeal.
- Willingness to learn advanced stonework techniques and follow guidance from experienced team members.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with crew members and supporting smooth project execution.

Work Environment
This is a field-based role working on residential and commercial job sites within approximately a 30-mile radius of Blue Mounds, WI. You will work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and should be comfortable with physical tasks, minor lifting, and extended periods of standing and manual labor. The work involves regular use of heavy equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and front-end loaders, as well as hand tools and power tools for stone and hardscape installation. Job sites require adherence to safety practices and maintaining an organized, professional work area throughout each project.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $72800.00 - $93600.00/yr.
