Job Summary and Qualifications The Float RN is primarily responsible for adhering to the hospital’s Standards of Patient Care to deliver safe and quality patient care. The RN performs all treatments and procedures as outlined in the Standards Manual and applicable regulatory and professional entities/guidelines, standards, protocols, and procedures within the scope of RN practice. The RN delegates, coordinates and directly supervises patient care provided by LPNs, CNAs, Unit Aides and Unit Coordinators. Patient Population Served: The Float RN is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, educational and safety needs of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Essential Position Functions Assessment of in‑patients: interview patients and caregiver/family on admission to obtain a bio‑psycho‑social history relevant to reason for admission, examine the patient’s physical status, review all test results including EKG, lab, x‑ray for ongoing assessment and reporting to physicians, assess patient and family/caregiver for discharge needs, re‑assess patient status at established time frames, communicate patient needs/assessment to physicians and interdepartmental services involved in the patient’s care, ensure thorough, accurate documentation of relevant data obtained during the assessment process, ensure sensitivity towards patients and caregiver/family by eliciting patient’s physical and emotional concerns, being a receptive listener, and providing an environment conducive to interviewing and the delivery of care, and assess information received from computerized cardiac and pulmonary monitoring equipment. Planning of Care: develop a written nursing care plan with patient and family input that is individualized to patient needs, strengths and weaknesses, coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care, direct the patient’s and caregiver/family’s participation in planning and delivery of care, and develop teaching plans to meet the learning needs of patients, family, and caregiver relevant to interdisciplinary discharge needs. Implementation of Plan: acknowledge, validate accurate transcription, coordinate and implement physician orders, apply the plan of care, monitor for effectiveness, administer medications and monitor for desired, side or adverse effects, assist the physician and other healthcare providers in administering treatments and procedures, provide instruction to patient and family, apply behavior and supportive therapy approaches with individuals and groups to accomplish goals and facilitate the delivery of care. Evaluating Plan of Care: review and update the treatment plan in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the patient and the family, communicate ongoing care needs to the Discharge Planning Team regarding discharge (home health, nursing homes, group homes, families, etc.). Administrative responsibilities: accept primary nurse role for assigned patients, accept the role of the Admissions Nurse and admit patients in collaboration with the unit to which it is assigned, maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, families, staff; correct hazards promptly; adhere to hospital safety policy and procedure; document all pertinent information on the patient’s medical record in an accurate, detailed manner; assume Charge Nurse role upon demonstrated knowledge of responsibilities when assigned; participate actively in department meetings; support department’s customer service efforts; provide service excellence to patients and their families, medical staff, peers, support services and other hospital personnel; provide immediate and satisfactory problem‑solving response for valid customer complaints or refer complex customer service problems to the Nurse Manager; demonstrate knowledge of, and support for, hospital Mission and Values Statement, department goals and objectives; assist in the formation and accomplishment of unit goals and objectives; develop and maintain professional relationships with physicians, peers, patients and their families, and medical support services; follow the principles of Infection Prevention and Control; participate in the department’s Performance Improvement program; assume responsibility for own professional development and ongoing education; attend required hours of continuing nursing education per year; demonstrate a commitment to containing costs and efficient use of material resources. Non‑essential Position Functions: perform other duties as assigned or as judgment of necessity dictates and participate in hospital/unit committees. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Hampshire or a compact state. Active BCLS and ACLS certifications. Working knowledge of underlying principles and standards for the following entities: CDC, CMS (HCFA). Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑stress work environment. Ability to maintain customer‑focused interpersonal communication skills and patient confidentiality. Compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
