Charge RN Oncology

Job Summary To assess, develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing care and treatment for patients in the assigned oncology clinical area. Coordinates the operations of the area, including protocol and non‑protocol chemotherapy regimens, calculating dosages, administering intravenous chemotherapy, scheduling patients, maintaining patient records, and admitting adult cancer patients. Counsels patients and family members on treatment, medication management, and condition status. Acts as a liaison between case managers, home health nurses, dietary services, utilization review, and other hospital staff. Assists physicians and investigators in collecting data for research and clinical trials and educates patients based on their psychological and physiological needs. Responsibilities In collaboration with the oncologist, provide direct patient care, initial and ongoing assessment, patient education, management of chemotherapy effects, medicine reconciliation, and coordination of care for patients enrolled in protocols and clinical trials. Assess and document each patient’s physical, social, and emotional status as part of the outpatient admissions process to the cancer center protocols. Refer patients and families for social work and financial assistance counseling as appropriate. Monitor patient response before and after procedures, make technical and medication adjustments as appropriate, review physician orders, and ensure daily oncology operations adhere to protocol. Stay current on chemotherapy protocols, participate in weekly tumor conferences, and review IRB-approved protocols before administering chemotherapy. Monitor and maintain related equipment; assist in maintaining a safe, organized, and clean work environment. Formulate and monitor a treatment plan for each patient, including educational needs. Administer chemotherapy drugs per physician orders, protocol and non‑protocol guidelines for lab values, and the patient’s physical and mental condition. Maintain effective communication with team members, informing them of any unusual occurrences and facilitating open lines of communication to ensure optimal team performance. Instruct patients through all phases of treatment per physician or oncologist orders. Serve on at least one nursing council, hospital or medical center committee, task force, or project team to improve patient care or the work area and demonstrate core standards of exceptional customer service. Maintain quality assurance checklist completion and monitor all nursing checklists. Responsible for IMPAC scheduling, nursing assessments, clinical notes, and billing responsibilities. Responsible for inventory management and TJC compliance duties. All duties listed are general in nature and are examples of tasks performed; they are not exclusive or all‑inclusive. Physical And Environmental Demands Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments such as high noise levels and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions including risk of radiation exposure, blood‑borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals. May involve occasional working hours significantly beyond scheduled hours, occasional travel to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant seasonal/clinical volume changes, frequent production of high‑quality work, frequent bending constant lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, constant crouching/stooping, occasional driving, constant kneeling, constant pushing/pulling, constant reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and constant walking. Requirements Must be licensed as an RN for one (1) year. Two (2) years of RN experience in the specified area preferred. BSN preferred. Valid RN license. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred; must achieve OCN certification within two years of employment.
