Commercial Closing Officer I (Open to Locations within the M&T Footprint)

Overview Responsible for ensuring completion and delivery of the Bank’s commercial closing capabilities for all assigned loans. Serves as the first line of defense, adhering to controls to mitigate risk exposure. Works as part of the account relationship team to arrange for each loan to be documented and closed with the correct borrowing parties and per the agreed-upon collateral and deal terms, approved in an accurate and timely manner. Primary Responsibilities Validate that loan closing documentation and all pre-closing due diligence requirements have been met and align with approved credit terms, regulatory requirements, and are properly reflected in the commercial loan system. Review, interpret, and validate loan documentation for each unique loan, ensuring key provisions are documented per M&T Legal guidance and the Outside Counsel Manual. Complete the Commercial Closing Checklist, ensuring all required documents are complete and necessary data to close, fund, and book have been captured correctly within established deadlines. Submit completed checklists to the Senior Closing Officer for review and to obtain ‘Clear to Close’. Follow up with approved bank counsel and other internal stakeholders to finalize documentation, funding, and booking of the loan in accordance with bank policies and procedures. Partner with designated teams and stakeholders to address discrepancies or issues found during due diligence, documentation, and review processes; escalates issues as appropriate. Coordinate with co‑workers and Team Leader to troubleshoot and resolve escalated problems, exception requests, and deviations from day‑to‑day business processes. Communicate and partner effectively with co‑workers, fostering a positive team environment. Obtain confirmation of loan closing and satisfactory review of executed loan documents from the Senior Closing Specialist and arrange loan funding and booking. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of processes, procedures, and escalation guidance related to accurate, timely, and complete closing capabilities. Manage time to meet deadlines while working with multiple partners on concurrent closing requests, including last‑minute modifications. Assist and provide backup to other closing team members as needed. Attend departmental training calls to stay current on procedures, regulatory updates, and commercial products. Report customer complaints to the Office of Customer Advocacy as appropriate. Identify and report risk‑related issues needing escalation to management. Scope of Responsibilities Validation of pre‑close due diligence items. Arranging for and reviewing commercial loan documentation. Confirming alignment of credit approval, loan documents, and the loan system, finalizing the settlement sheet, loan closing, and review of executed documents. Arranging and confirming loan funding. Completing and submitting required data for loan booking, followed by a post‑closing review. Supervisory or Managerial Responsibilities None. Education and Experience Required Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of related commercial loan closing, documentation, operations, or administration experience; or a combined six (6) years of higher education and/or work experience. Knowledge of the commercial closing process, loan documentation, loan policy, applicable regulations, and affiliated technology. Strong attention to detail and ability to examine information and resolve or escalated issues. Strong interpersonal skills for business partner relationships within and outside the organization. Ability to work individually and as a member of a team. Self‑motivated and well‑organized. Ability to work under time constraints and handle multiple tasks. Good verbal and written communication skills. Education and Experience Preferred Familiarity with loan approvals and escalation/exceptions requirements. Knowledge of unit/department policies and procedures. Knowledge of applicable products, systems, and workflows. Paralegal experience helpful, as well as experience in lending operations, underwriting, and customer service. Location Louisville, Kentucky, United States of America.
