Medical Lab Tech

Job Summary This position performs medical diagnostic testing and specimen processing in the Clinical Laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician performs waived, moderate and highly complex testing under the supervision of a Medical Technologist or General Supervisor and is responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory policies and procedures. Job Description Understand basic principles involved in assigned procedures. Evaluate specimens for acceptability, investigate and document problems with unacceptable specimens. Perform and document instrument maintenance and calibration as scheduled, troubleshoot instruments as assigned by supervisor. Report results within established time limits for procedures, STAT, critical values and other categories as defined by laboratory policy. Collect specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures for timely and accurate testing. Perform and document quality control as specified for each procedure meeting established internal and regulatory guidelines. Participate in Quality Assurance activities to meet quality improvement standards and perform proficiency testing. Ensure all incidents that do not meet standard operating procedures are documented in the appropriate QA software. Clean, organize and stock lab work stations; follow safety policies and procedures and use personal protective equipment. Enhance professional growth through continuing education and in‑service training. Comply with universal precaution and safety procedures; attend required safety training programs. Perform other duties as assigned. Education, Credentials, Licenses Associate’s Degree in a Relevant Science with technician training program in a school accredited or approved by HHS or MLT eligible under Medicare/CLIA regulation(s) and has certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency as a Medical Laboratory Technician. OR Associate’s degree in a Relevant Science with completion of a technician training program in a school accredited or approved by HHS or MLT eligible under Medicare/CLIA regulation(s) with ASCP Certification. OR If Registry Eligible – Associate’s Degree and has completed a Medical Laboratory Technician training program in a school accredited or approved by HHS or MLT eligible under Medicare/CLIA regulation(s) and must be certified within a year of eligibility or be certified one year from date of hire. OR Be a high school graduate or equivalent who successfully completed an official military medical laboratory course of 50 weeks and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) with ASCP Certification.
