Phlebotomist

Summary The phlebotomist is responsible for collecting high-quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distributing specimens to proper departments, and preparing and handling specimens for laboratory analysis. Responsibilities (25%) Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures, responding to the needs of customers of all ages, and helping resolve exceptions. (25%) Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens. (25%) Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups, following exact protocols and patient preparation procedures. (25%) Handles specimens, selects appropriate specimen type to ensure high quality results, ensures timely distribution to reduce turnaround time, and prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories. Other Duties and Responsibilities Follows patient registration procedures where required. Follows strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens. Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices and policies. Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required. Uses the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) to schedule workload, interpret test orders, place orders in the computer, retrieve billing information, assist with patient registration, and communicate test results while maintaining confidentiality. Adheres to all laboratory policies, procedures, and federal regulations such as CLIA, CAP, and OSHA. Maintains confidentiality of all medical information. Has knowledge and ability to treat patients ranging in age from birth to 100+ years. Has appropriate access to the medication room for use of the pneumatic tube station (where applicable). All other duties as assigned. Certifications and Licencures Drivers License Fingerprinting Required Education High school diploma or equivalent Specialization: General Studies Other Information Requires completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical experience, equivalent education, or a minimum of 3-4 years of phlebotomy experience. Communication, customer service, and organizational skills required. Eligibility to drive a company vehicle under medical center insurance guidelines. Mandatory annual OSHA training according to the Exposure Control Plan. Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines, laboratory test and medical terminology, and current laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols preferred. Physical and mental requirements: exposure to stressful situations, ability to wear protective equipment, mobility requirements, normal vision and hearing, endurance for sitting/standing/walking, handling of blood-borne pathogens, and ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally. Physical Demand Level: Light. Equivalent Experience and Other Comments High school education with General Studies specialization.
