About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse, Preop/PACU Profession: RN Specialty: Post Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse (PACU), Operating Room / Circulate, Pre-Op Duration: Temp to Hire Shift: Various Hours per Shift: Not specified Experience: Minimum two years licensed RN experience in PreOp/PACU (i.e. ICU, ED) License: Current, valid RN license in state of practice Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS (within 90 days if assigned pediatrics) Must-Have: Strong leadership skills Description: This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing standards. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others under their direction. Utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills to assess data and plan, provide, and evaluate care appropriate to the patients' needs. Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and post-operative planning needs. Reviews patient history and physical with patient/family and assures completion within an appropriate timeframe. Reviews available information obtained by other health care team members. Reviews diagnostic and laboratory data and reports abnormal results to the appropriate caregivers. Completes assessments and reassessments according to patient need and as outlined in policy. Formulates a plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data and patient, family, and health team input. Initiates a plan of care based on patient-specific needs, assessment data, and the medical plan of care. Goals for patients are realistic, measurable, and developed in conjunction with the patient/family. Considers the physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age-specific, and educational needs of the patient in the plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changing patient needs based on evaluation of patient status. Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the health care team's activities. Provides care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care, in compliance with policies, procedures, and standards of care. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating with other caregivers about patient status. Evaluates the patient's and family's response to care and teaching and revises the plan of care as needed. Evaluates patient progress towards goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with other health care team members. Evaluates patient response and the effectiveness of patient teaching. Documents assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation is legible, timely, and in accordance with policy. Documentation reflects objective/subjective data, nursing interventions, and patient responses to treatment. Notes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner. Provides care based on the best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participates in shared leadership within the facility. Interacts and participates in the education, role development, and orientation of personnel, patients, families, and visitors. Promotes/supports the growth of others through precepting and mentoring when appropriate. Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of national nursing quality indicators and outcomes. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating core and leader behaviors each day. Specific tasks or responsibilities will be documented as outlined by the immediate manager. Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, squatting, reaching, and stretching frequently. Possesses physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly to unexpected patient care needs. Requires adequate hearing and visual acuity, including color vision. Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and the ability to grasp and handle objects. Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating and transferring. May be required to lift up to 75 pounds. Must use standard precautions due to the threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids. Needs the ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking. May require periodic use of computer, phone, and general office equipment. Minimum qualifications include an Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing, or higher. Licensed RN with no experience in PreOp/PACU must be enrolled in the Perianesthesia Academy with successful completion within four months. Preferred qualifications include PreOp/PACU licensed RN experience.
