Paid 4th Year Audiology Externship

Overview Jacksonville Hearing and Balance Institute (JHBI) is currently accepting applications for a 2027-2028 Audiology Externship. JHBI is a prominent neurotology practice that primarily serves the adult population. Our fast‑paced practice will provide the student with experience in comprehensive audiologic assessment (pure tone and speech audiometry, tympanometry, reflexes, OAE's), electrophysiologic assessment (ECOG, cVEMP, and ABR), cochlear implant and BAHA services, hearing aids, tinnitus assessment and management, APD evaluations, and comprehensive vestibular evaluations (CDP, rotary chair, and VNG). Supervised by a team of six audiologists, four of whom hold CCC‑A certification. Application Process All application materials must be submitted in one complete packet. Staffing: 0 FTE Masters Degree 6 FTE Au.D. 0 FTE Ph.D. 0 FTE other Doctorate (ScD) 1 FTE professional support staff (technicians/audiometric assistants) 18 FTE clerical support staff Student placements per year: 0 first‑year Au.D. clinical rotations 0 second‑year 0 third‑year 1 fourth‑year externship Compensation: Salary Interview travel: Not compensated Vacation: 10 days per year Continuing education: Externs are encouraged to attend local conferences and events. Start date: Summer 2027 Work hours: 40 hours per week Satellite centers: No travel required Local students: Not preferred Orientation and Policies Orientation to clinical policies and procedures – provided Orientation to patient rights and education – provided Orientation to quality assessment, assurance, and improvement – provided Expected Skills and Learning Objectives Skills to master before starting the externship: Strong report writing skills Master audiometric testing, including masking rules Critical thinking about each case presented Foundational knowledge of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone‑anchored devices Working knowledge of vestibular assessment and interpretation Skills to develop during the externship: Proficient report writing and electronic medical record keeping Independent performance of all diagnostic evaluations Advanced critical thinking in case analysis Proficient counseling, selection, and fitting of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone‑anchored devices Independent performance and interpretation of a full vestibular evaluation Clinical Opportunities Rarely: Hearing Screenings Never: Pediatric evaluations – infant/toddler Rarely: Pediatric evaluations – school‑age Everyday: Adult hearing evaluations Everyday: Tympanometry Everyday: Acoustic reflexes Regularly: Auditory processing evaluations Rarely: Hearing Screenings Regularly: Evoked potential assessments Never: Intra‑operative monitoring cases Everyday: Otoacoustic emissions Never: Industrial/hearing conservation Everyday: Vestibular assessments Never: Vestibular rehabilitation Everyday: Hearing aids dispensed Everyday: Hearing aid selection/fitting Never: Audiologic rehabilitation (group or individualized) Everyday: Cochlear implant evaluations Regularly: Cochlear implant rehabilitation Everyday: Tinnitus assessments Regularly: Tinnitus rehabilitation Never: Cerumen management Research Opportunities Externs may complete case studies with assistance from a preceptor. University Communication Frequency: As needed Support: Initial contact regarding evaluation expectations and availability to answer questions. Other Information All externs are supervised.
