The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library Public Safety Department is seeking professional, customer-service-oriented individuals to join our Part-Time Weekend and Event Team. We are actively hiring officers who can work Fridays, Saturdays, and especially Sundays, with opportunities for additional hours during special events, evening programming, and holidays. 

Public Safety Officers protect Winterthur's guests, staff, collections, and 1,000-acre estate while serving as welcoming ambassadors for one of the nation's premier museums and gardens. This position offers a unique blend of security, public interaction, emergency response, and event support in a beautiful and historic setting.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the leadership of the Director of Safety & Security, the Public Safety Department has undergone significant modernization and growth, creating a structured and professional public safety environment. We are seeking individuals who value professionalism, teamwork, sound judgment, continuous learning, and a commitment to safety, security, and customer service.

The Public Safety Officer (PSO) is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Winterthur’s staff, guests, visitors, Collections, and physical assets. Serving as a warm and welcoming first point of contact, the Officer performs a wide range of safety, security, and customer‑service functions across the estate. Public Safety Officers respond to emergencies, support de‑escalation efforts, monitor and operate security systems, and ensure adherence to institutional policies. Duties may include patrols of galleries, the House during self-guided tours, museum buildings, grounds, and all exterior and interior access points. In addition, selected PSOs
will be cross‑trained to work in all departmental positions and roles, enabling operational flexibility and professional development across all Public Safety functions.

Priority hiring for candidates available Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and special events. Availability for day, evening, and overnight shifts is required.

Compensation:  Starting at $15.25/hr. - $16.00/hr. (After 90-Day Probationary Period) Room for advancement.

Work Schedule : Flexible scheduling with variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Respond to and investigate incidents involving the safety and security of guests, employees, collections, facilities, and property.
• Provide emergency response services, including first aid, CPR, and assistance during evacuations and other emergencies.
• Follow established emergency procedures for fire alarms, severe weather, medical incidents, environmental hazards, and other emergencies.
• Deliver professional customer service by assisting guests, employees, volunteers, contractors, and vendors.
• Identify, report, and take appropriate action to address safety and security concerns.
• Enforce organizational policies and procedures related to people, vehicles, property, and facility access.
• Monitor electronic security, fire, and life-safety systems and respond appropriately to alarms and incidents.
• Prepare accurate and detailed reports documenting incidents, activities, and observations.
• Conduct routine inspections and patrols to maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment.
• Support special events, after-hours operations, and other departmental activities as assigned.

Minimum Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Must have customer service, safety, or law-enforcement-related experience. Entry-level candidates may be considered. 

Preferred Experience: 2+ years in public safety/security/law enforcement or customer service in high-traffic environments; experience with large crowds; First Aid/CPR certification a plus.

5. Proficient oral and written communication skills
6. CPR/First Aid certification is preferred. Without prior certification, must be able to pass a written and practical test after attending a training course as designated by Winterthur
7. Basic computer skills, including word processing, accessing and managing a Winterthur-provided e-mail account, and navigating the internet
8. Ability to utilize computerized security and office systems after training

Essential Functions

1. Valid driver’s license with no conviction for driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol within 3 years of application. Certified copy is to be provided by applicant upon request
2. No convictions for theft or sexually related offenses
3. Must be able to work within the confines of the Museum or other Collection areas that require tight security and attention to detail
4. Must enjoy dealing with the public in a cultural property setting
5. Must be capable of performing CPR /First Aid after training
6. Must be able to climb multiple stairs; at least 9 floors
7. Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time; potentially 8 hours or more
8. Must be able to sit in and operate a SUV or Pickup type vehicle for an 8-hour shift
9. Must be able to lift 50+ pounds
10. Must be able to climb a ladder
